great offers at fish and co

had lunch at fish and co at jurong point today during our long 3 hours break. we originally went there for the $9++ offer. however, upon reaching there, we realised that they had plenty of ongoing offers and decided to take another one.

as you can see, the restaurant is in the festive mood... gearing up for halloween! there were orange balloons, fake cobwebs and black streamers everywhere.

between the 4 of us, we chose the set for 2 @ $25.80++. it came with 1 starter (soup of the day, fish nuggets or garden salad), 2 main courses (peri peri catch, coriander catch, new york fish and chips, or the best fish and chips in town) and 2 drinks (soft drinks, tea, kola tonic or passion fruit).

passion fruit and coke. love their passion fruit soda, it's not too sweet or heavy. just nice.

garden salad. it had a great mix of vegetables and came with some ikan billis on top, went great with the vinegrette sauce.

fish nuggets. interesting idea? much softer than the usual chicken variety.

peri peri catach. it's always dory. too spicy for my stomach at the moment, so i recommended it to kanch, who loved it.

new york fish and chips. huge isn't it? parv couldn't finish it.

my coriander fish. very light and just nice for my stomach! but i probably wouldn't want it otherwise.

check out fish and co's website for more offers. this is a great time to hit the restaurant!

brown food (doesn't really sound appetising, but it is)

you know, after uploading all the photos of lailai family restaurant, i just realised they are in shades of brown! absolutely no variation of colour except for some occasional greens. oh well, that just tells you about how high the fibre content is.

my one love! delicious red milk tea. this is actually shaken, unlike the common practise of just adding syrup to milk tea. the tea is without artificial flavourings, rich and frothy. goes down your throat with the little bits of pearls like a dream .

their signature stewed beef noodles. following lily's habit, i asked for the thinner noodles (kind of like mee kia) and i found that it compliments the beef and soup much better. some people might not like stewed beef because the parts usually come with tendon. you don't have to worry here, the beef comes in chunks of meat.

braised pig intestines! the restaurant serves it braised or deep fried. i nornmally go with the braised one. unlike the ones you have in kway chap, this is lighter and not as salty.

salt and pepper chicken. my sis always orders this. have no idea why. find it very salty (as the name suggests) and it's so deep fried my throat itches just thinking of it.

shredded chicken mee sua. never had the chicken one before, as expected i go for the pig intestines one. still prefer the pig intestines one. however, if you were to compare this dish with the ones prepared by shilin night market, this is much better. more noodles and the sauce is not as watery.

just in case you're wondering why am i eating so much when i'm having food poisoning? i'm recovering and i didn't eat much! took a little here and there from my mum and i was already quite full. can't wait to be back in full force.

An ambulance delivers a California high school student to the hospital Saturday. Police say she was gang raped.
STORY HIGHLIGHTS
  • 10 people involved in assault, 10 others watched and offered no help, police say
  • Richmond, California, police say student was gang raped for over two hours
  • Former student, 19, and 15-year-old arrested
  • Victim, 15, remains in the hospital in stable condition

Richmond, California (CNN) -- Investigators say as many as 20 people were involved in or stood and watched the gang rape of a 15-year-old girl outside a California high school homecoming dance Saturday night.

Police posted a $20,000 reward Tuesday for anyone who comes to them with information that helps arrest and convict those involved in what authorities describe as a 2½-hour assault on the Richmond High School campus in suburban San Francisco.

Two teenage suspects have been jailed, but more arrests, as many as 20 total, are expected, according to a police detective.

"We will be making arrests continually as we develop probable cause," said Richmond Police Lt. Mark Gagan. "With this number of people implicated in the incident we're going to be making arrests on an ongoing basis."

As many as 10 people were involved in the assault in a dimly lighted back alley at the school, while another 10 people watched without calling 911 to report it, police said.

A 1999 California law makes it illegal not to report a witnessed crime against a child, but the law applies only to children 14 and under.

"We do not have the ability to arrest people who witnessed the crime and did nothing," Gagan said. "The law can be very rigid. We don't have the authority to make an arrest."

Charles Ramsey, a member of the Richmond school board, said the school district bears some responsibility for the attack. School administrators and police apparently weren't watching the area as they should have, Ramsey said.

The school said it would hold a safety meeting for parents and students Wednesday evening to address the assault.

The victim was found unconscious under a bench shortly before midnight Saturday, after police received a call from someone in the area who had overheard people at the assault scene "reminiscing about the incident," Richmond Police Lt. Mark Gagan said.

The girl was flown by helicopter to a hospital where she was admitted in critical condition. She was in stable condition Tuesday, police said.

Investigators canvassed the community with fliers, which included the reward offer, hoping to identify more suspects Tuesday.

"There is one individual in custody who has made some spontaneous statements that have led me to believe that he is culpable for what happened," Richmond police Lt. Johan Simon said.

Nineteen-year-old Manuel Ortega, described as a former student at the school, was arrested soon after he fled the scene and will face charges of rape, robbery and kidnapping, police said.

A 15-year-old was later arrested and charged with one count of felony sexual assault. A third teenager was being interviewed, Gagan said.

"Based on witness statements and suspect statements, and also physical evidence, we know that she was raped by at least four suspects committing multiple sex acts," Gagan said.

"As people announced over time that this was going on, more people came to see, and some actually participated," Gagan said.

The attack occurred on school grounds as the annual homecoming dance was under way inside the school Saturday night, authorities said.

hate being sick

had really bad food poisoning during the weekend. mum accompanied me to the doctor yesterday night. was walking really slow and grabbing onto her for support. had diarrhea 7 times and puked 3 times. everything i ate or drank just came back up.

today, i'm just light headed and sleeping the day away. no appetite for food and surprisingly not thirsty at all. no fan of nausea, i'm keeping away from food. just some crackers and trying to sip water bit by bit. hope i'll be better in time to finish my assignment due wednesday.

such bus stops still exist?

back from ambiga's dinner at yishun! wow have been really traveling around singapore these few days.

this is the bus stop opposite her house, which has only one operating bus service. was so shocked to see this kind of bus stops still in existence! it was common in the 90s and is now replaced by sleeker and well lit varieties. the bus stop was so dark and my friends were blinded by the flash. wouldn't want to be caught at this bus stop alone at night.

not again?

getting sick of seeing sushi tei? so am i! this is my 3rd time in a month! i don't eat seafood, but my family loves it, explaining this unhealthy obsession which is driving me insane!

tried some new dishes this time around. will not be uploading any dishes i've uploaded before, so don't worry.

mango prawn roll. my sis doesn't like it. she prefers her phoenix roll which has her favourite combi of avocado and unagi (eel).

sushi (from left): scallop, salmon roe, uni (sea urchin) & mashed tuna. quite worth it ($18) considering there's a variety of toppings and they were generous with the uni, which is very expensive. if you're interested, the scallop is half the thickness of a sashimi slice.

as for me, i had rice instead of noodles. garlic fried rice with chicken. not bad, buti'm noodles kind of girl. and i should have eaten something soupy. kept coughing the whole night.

cod fish. the sauce was typical jap teriyaki sauce and the fish cooked to perfection. i tried a bit, but i still don't like the oily taste of cod fish.

last but not least, dessert! i have tried the melon (this's month promotion) and yuzu ice cream. and they were both fantabulous! especially the melon one. if you love honeydew or rock melon, don't give this a miss! it's only $3.20-3.40 per scoop. yesterday i had the strawberry millefeuille and it was great too. not too sweet with little bits of strawberry and pastry. yum!

hopefully i wouldn't be posting on sushi tei again soon...

garuda padang + movie

it's a club outing today! a prelude to our kl trip!

we had a late lunch at garuda padang, which is under tung lok group (surprising huh?). i was looking for a halal restaurant for parv and came across good reviews online, thus we decided to try it.

the restaurant is located at vivocity b2, the same floor as the entrance from the mrt. it's no wonder why i've never noticed it-- it's tucked away behind the escalator.

it's a rather small "self service" restaurant. took forever for the waitress to notice and seat us. we were already deciding to walk in ourselves when she approached us. and after settling down, she didn't even inform us that we were supposed to order from the counter ourselves. we were left feeling pretty lost for about 5 minutes.

there's a signboard near the entrance of the restaurant which states the price of some of the dishes. but you might as well walk a little bit more and get all the prices as well as available dishes that day from the counter.

parvin and kanch looking at the range of food. some food are already cooked (as you can see from the picture), others like sambal kang kong are only prepared when ordered.

here is what we ordered:
  1. pegedel (potato) $1.50/each: delicious! tastes a bit different from the usual pegedels, but among the 3 of us, we couldn't tell what.
  2. ikan billis and tempe $6/portion: more like peanuts and tempe. i didn't eat much of this, since i don't eat tempe.
  3. beef rendang $6/portion: my favourite dish. there is a bit of coconut in it. parv didn't like it though. she prefers the traditional kind.
  4. ayam goreng $4.80/portion: very expensive! $4.80 for a fried chicken breast!
  5. sambal kang kong $6/portion (not featured here): spicy. one bite and i was coughing. we didn't finish this. too hot.

overall? wouldn't recommend it. the bill came up to $46.50 for the 3 of us. considering that we didn't eat that much (1 pegedel, 1 piece of beef, half chicken breast, little kang kong), $15.50 per pax is crazy. you can get better at mosque street.

after eating, we got tickets for my sister's keeper.

i have been looking forward to this movie for very long. the book's by jodi picoult and the director directed the notebook, so i had high expectations of the movie. while the actors were not a list (cameron diaz isn't considered one anymore right?), they all gave stunning performances, especially sofia vassilieva. she's a rising star, claiming young artist award nomination and winning child actress of the year (2000). unlike amanda hudgens and miley cyrus, she does more serious genres (admireable!). hopefully we'll be seeing her more often in the future.

A happy journey home

SINGAPOREANS can now look forward to out-of-the-box ideas to battle ungracious behaviour on board public transport.

The Public Transport Council has unveiled its top three winners of the multimedia contest, 'A Happy Journey Starts Like That'.

The competition aims to promote graciousness on buses and trains.

Ranging from awareness videos to entries capturing shrewd solutions, viewers can now view graciousness in a new light.

Take a peek at what you can do to make your journey home a happy one on RazorTV.

isn't the public transport council being a bit idealistic? a multimedia contest being the solution to ungracious behaviour on public transport? they should do a study on who these ungracious people are and then pick a media that these people utilise, so the messages actually reaches the target group.

her signature range is called topsy turvy cakes and as the name suggests, the cakes consist of many uneven colourful layers.

jackie's birthday at beppu menkan

it's been a long time since i've met up with the girls! seriously, october is a bankrupt month for me. so many birthdays and house visits. but still, good to catch up once in a while.

we met at tiong bahru plaza, as jackie wanted to try beppu menkan japanese noodles on the second floor. no problem for me, love to try out new food outlets. this place reminds me of ajisen-- japanese ramen.

the place offers ramen with different toppings, tori karage, teriyaki chicken, seafood, salmon, prawns, you name it. also, you can have a choice of how spicy you want your noodles to be. you choose between 1 to 16 chillis. seeing that most of us had sore throat that day, we stuck to 1 chilli, which seriously isn't hot at all.

my tori karage ramen with 1 chilli. there were plenty of chicken, so much that i had to distribute it to my friends.

chialin's salmon ramen with 2 chillis. colour doesn't seem to differ much from mine. it's a tad spicier and i would recommend 2 chillis for most people and 4 chillis for more adventurous ones.

the noodles were not as nice as ajisen, but the price is much cheaper. less than $10 per bowl of noodles. considering that the soup is quite thick and they were generous with the ingredients, i will definitely be back for a second visit.

we got the cake from polar. it's a vanilla spongecake decorated with white chocolate. i still prefer strawberry shortcake from four leaves. the cake from polar is just too creamy and some of us started scrapping cream off after a few bites.

next birthday: caroline's. can't wait!

visit to the zoo

how did we know we reached the zoo? the rubbish bins at the bus stop. loud animal prints, which i'm sure ris low will love.

my sis's favourite photo of the day. living her grand dream of taming the crocodile.

although ah meng has passed, the zoo continues to use her name. the zoo renamed their eateries ah meng kopi and ah meng restaurant.

while waiting for the brothers, we saw this three malay boys trying different poses with my sis's favourite crocodilian. they were so cute and had clear roles (photographer/director and models).

poor monkey looks so worried.

we almost couldn't spot the crocodilian. such excellent camouflage.

another animal print bin.

so far evidence has shown that my sis is an animal hater.

i think they were trying to act like the statues. hmmm... not really working.

this baboon was very human like. he was actually posing for us. giving us different profiles.

haha so cute! didn't know they had a squirrel exhibit at the zoo.

while waiting for the rainforest show to start, saw this really cute baby in the front. look at the hair! must be very naughty.

the show was very disappointing, seems like a common theme (similar bad experiences previously at the zoo and night safari). poor acting, pronunciation and voice projection by the mcs. the zoo is one of the most visited attraction in singapore and they should do something to improve the standards.

one of the cute animals during the show.

poor polar bears. the weather was so hot. if the zoo takes the effort to bring them over, they should ensure the environment of the enclosure be similar to the natural habitat and not enforce our environment on them.

well deserved treat at b&j after the visit!
