my parents' loot from south america

three tries... if you had been in south america for a month, what would you get?

havaianas!!!

according to my parents, they sell it really cheap there. a nice pair of sandals costs only sgd$20! whereas in singapore, you get it for double that rate. the cheapest pair of slippers only cost them sgd$10.

i was drooling at the sea of havaianas on the floor as my parents unpacked. some of the designs i have never seen in singapore before.

anyway, they are not all for keeps! some of them my parents bought as souvenirs, but of course as their firstborn, i get the first pick!

the other thing that caught my eye were these liquor bottles. they actually came with liquor but obviously the liquor had been consumed. however, the bottles are a unique souvenir and keepsake of the art and craft in south america.

will be uploading some of the photos my parents took if i have time, since exams are starting soon :(

shopping at shinnpark

you might not be able to tell from my room or my table in the office, but i'm very particular about organisation. however, with my recent fetish for huge shapeless bags, it was hard for me to keep things partitioned. hence, my infatuation with pouches.

but this latest invention, the bag organiser, has helped a lot. i have seen it selling on a lot of blogshops, websites holding sprees for them, but i was never interested in getting one till my buddy lil asked me to look out for them for her.

i got mine and two for her at a flea at orchard central during the weekend. my sis and i purposely made a trip down to look for the booth of one of our favourite shops, shinnpark. voted best e-commerce blog for 2009 and 2010, the layout of the website is user-friendly and you can always find interesting items there.

i got the bag organiser for a dollar lesser than the online price. other than the bag organiser, there was a variety of items there, discounts depending on the item. my sis got a bag which had $20 off!

in case you would like to see their flea items and was afraid you missed it, do not worry! they would be there this weekend as well. check out their website for more details.

I CAN'T STAND IT!!!

my parents are back from south america and i sure miss the peace when my mum was not around. the moment she's back (as in the very moment she stepped into the house) she started grumbling and banging around the house. so irritating. it's already 9.30 pm and i'm trying to go to bed so i can rest up for the week ahead and all i can hear is her throwing things around the house and shouting.

never know what's she pms-ing--pre, present, post or past. her hormonal mood-swings can drive even the sanest person up the wall. some of my aunts are way past her age and i don't see them acting like that. if i ever break down because of stress, i know what my root cause is.

thank god it's not hfmd

even after applying salt and making a trip to the pharmacy for a paste, my ulcer is still as huge as ever. in fact, it might have actually grown in size. so, i went to visit the doctor this afternoon after much fussing by my colleagues and the nagging pain of the wound.

the doctor checked my hands and feet and declared it wasn't hand, foot and mouth disease because i do not have blisters on them. while that is good news, it was worrying when she couldn't tell me what caused it. and she might have to refer me to a specialist if the ulcer still doesn't subside by next week because it is "very bad."

i have lost 2 kg because it's really hard for me to eat. every time the food or liquid touches the ulcer, it stings. i have to chew slowly and be careful to keep the food on my left side. in addition, after chewing for a while, it hurts so much, i give up eating. cross my fingers and hope that the ulcer will go away by next week.

movies i want to watch!

what better way to de-stress than to watch movies? on a side note, i have realised that there are so many movies i have raved about to my family and friends and they end up watching it instead of me :( i then live vicariously through their recounts of the movies. anyway, these are the upcoming movies that i hope to watch before they stop showing in cinemas!

1. the other guys

New York City Police Detectives Christopher Danson (Dwayne Johnson) and P. K. Highsmith (Samuel L. Jackson) are the toughest and most famous cops in the city with the best capture rate no matter what it takes to get their man, even if the city must pay $12 million in property damages to capture a small crook.

However, in their ranks, there are two other detectives that are want-to-be heroes sitting in the wings. Detective Allen Gamble (Will Ferrell) and Terry Hoitz (Mark Wahlberg) just want their chance in the sun to make a big collar and get a medal too. They get their chance when a small case falls into their lap which ends up being a very big high-profile case instead. It's the opportunity they have been waiting for, but do they have what it takes to be the next police heroes?

2. the switch

JENNIFER ANISTON stars alongside JASON BATEMAN in this offbeat comedy as Kassie, a smart, funloving single woman who, despite her neurotic best friend Wallys (BATEMAN) objections, decides its time to have a babyeven if it means doing it by herself... with a little help from a charming sperm donor (PATRICK WILSON).

But, unbeknownst to her, Kassies plans go awry because of a lastminute switch that isnt discovered until seven years later when Wally finally gets acquainted with Kassies cutethough slightly neuroticson. From the people behind Little Miss Sunshine and Juno comes The Switch," due in theaters this summer.

3. i love you, philip morris

The improbable real-life story of a charismatic conman's journey from small-town businessman to flamboyant white-collar criminal, starring Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor.

Steven Russell (Jim Carrey) is happily married to Debbie (Leslie Mann) and a member of the local police force when a car accident provokes a dramatic reassessment of his life. Steven realizes he's gay and decides to live his life to the fullest - even if it means breaking the law. Steven's new, extravagant lifestyle involves cons and fraud and, eventually, a stay in the State Penitentiary where he meets sensitive, soft-spoken Phillip Morris (Ewan McGregor). His devotion to freeing Philip from jail and building the perfect life together prompts Steven to attempt - and often succeed at - one impossible con after another.

irritant on my tongue

i have a huge ass ulcer on my tongue and it hurts like crazy. i've been talking funny (it's so painful i can't really move my tongue) and even my students are making fun of the way i talk. also, because of that, i've been restricting myself to soupy stuff and i'm starting to show withdrawal symptoms from the lack of fried chicken wings and bubble tea. my sis has been after me to put bonjela on it but i'm too scared of pain to do anything about it. now it's humongous and it's turning a scary shade of yellow.

i'm not sure if i should take it as a sign from god that it's healing and to leave it alone so that my tongue will be all nice and pink tomorrow... OR it can be that my ulcer has taken a turn for the worse and that i have take more drastic measures like putting salt on my ulcer (which my sister describes as a searing pain, even more than bonjela but gets the job done quickly).

also according to some article, these are the few things i should do until my ulcer heals:

1) do not eat very hot food stuffs
2) avoid hot tea or coffee (which means no bubble tea :()
3) eat rice in sufficient quantity
4) eat fruits like papaya, apple, and green banana
5) curd is very useful as it provides vitamin strength
6) avoid alcoholic drinks and smoking which reduces the process of healing of ulcers (no problem here)
7) avoid spicy and salty food. also avoid food that contains acid like lemon and tomatoes

i'm now going to suck it up and indulge in some sadistic pleasure of rubbing salt on my wound (literally). i told lil if she can hear me from her house, it probably means it really hurts a lot!

embracing my htc tattoo

i'm always complaining to my friends about my htc phone, about how not user-friendly it is. it has already been a few months, yet i'm only basic features like call, sms, camera and daily planner because i'm too lazy to download and read the instruction manual (not my fault the phone doesn't come with a tangible manual).

and so, it was only recently that i decided what's the point of spending money to buy an android phone if i'm only using features of a normal phone?

my first step to embracing my htc tattoo was to buy a case for it! it now comes in a sleek waterproof case i got from harris for $19.90! for a fuzz free me, it's just a slip-in case, so i don't have to unzip, un-buckle or unbutton!

my second step was to subscribe to a surf and talk plan, m1's iphone lite, so that i could use the internet and download new android applications. did i mention i love m1? their service is always prompt and you don't have to hang on the line forever like singtel to get to the telephone operator. i got all the information i needed and my plan changed in just five minutes!

i have also downloaded an application called 'netcounter' which keeps track of the data usage (because this phone doesn't come with one). according to the reviews i have read, it is one of the most accurate data usage counter.

last but not least, the third step... i got my phone a new set of clothes! yes, a new handphone cover! it is the one in the picture above, made with white leather from garskin. the moment i saw it on the homepage, i knew i had to get it. $34.50 after conversion to sgd. will be arriving in 2 weeks :)

city space @ swissotel

yesterday peiyi and lilian jie jie brought me to a very interesting and classy place, and it was high up too! we took this lift which blasted off from the first to seventieth floor in less than a minute. actually it wasn't even a blast off, it was a smooth ride and i didn't even feel like i was ascending at all (except for the ear pressure).

they brought me to city space at swissotel. the space was rather dimly lit, very elegant and rather private. sad to say, i forgot to bring my camera :( the view was awesome! we had a bird's eye view of the city, however if you're thinking of watching f1 there, think again. it does not face the f1 route. according to the staff, you can only hear the high octane noises.

Source: www.swissotel.com

my aunt told me to recommend the place to my friends so that we could hang out there. but... i do not have that much $$$!!! the prices for drinks are quite average but food-wise, rather extravagant. a serving of chicken wings (12 drumlets) costs $26! how to spend that kind of money with my type of pay?

the girls in my life

what inspired this post was my conversation with lily about bridesmaids. don't ask, that conversation alone could be a post all on its own, but i'll just leave it for another time. so i thought i'll do a post on...

the girls in my life

sis: i'm always attempting to pinch her chubby cheeks, but i'm never successful. one day i'll be unpredictable and catch her unaware.

siyu:
met up with siyu during the weekend for some girl bonding time. she really amazes me with her capacity to poop immediately after a meal. now we know how some girls stay so skinny.

lil: although we both stay in jurong west, we never can seem to meet up. hence, proving the expression "so near yet so far". so happy we managed to have lunch today.

qi: the cousin we bullied when we were young, who grew up to be the nicest one of us all. she's part of the jurong west gang, now that she's studying in ntu.

biaojie: the big sister (who's still young haha, and) has two adorable angels and constantly checks on my well-being.

and i almost forgot...

parv: the most promiment bims and a wonderful traveling partner. we'll definitely go turkey next year!

yup that's all for me being emo, back to marking!

i'm growing fatter!

not what every girl wants to hear. i saw a friend i haven't seen in ages and she said because of that, she wasn't sure it was me from the back. it's great news though! i've only put on 0.5kg, maybe due to the holidays (which wasn't much of a holiday in the first place). endeavouring to look not so scrawny!

outing @ somerset

it's no good thing when two sisters go out together, we tend to shop a lot! luckily, we only met five hours before the movie, so we only had time to hit forever 21, muji and a couple of other shops before having dinner. can you imagine if we had gone out in the morning? my wardrobe now has five new additions :)

we had dinner at burger bench & bar at cineleisure. it was good. i preferred their black pepper beef burger to the handburger's. the sauces were better compared to the handburger where i felt like i was eating only meat with vegetable and bread. however, it's not really cheap. two burgers, one chips, one red hot wings (the chilli is HOT!), two drinks and an awesomely divine dark chocolate soft serve ice cream set us back $31.

then we went for our french romantic comedy--heartbreaker--featuring mrs johnny depp! it was really funny. however the funny parts were by the two sidekicks instead of the main characters. i always thought french films are more mature in contrast with american ones; even a romantic comedy proves my point.

one thing that really stood out throughout the whole movie was vanessa paradis' gap tooth. my sis kept asking why would johnny depp marry someone who is imperfect? actually i thought that was something special about her. why be another surgically enhanced person when you are secure and confident in your own skin?

the handburger @ raffles city

after my course at orchard, i took a bus down to city hall to meet my sis for dinner. 174 seems like a pretty handy bus to have from boon lay. it goes to both town and city hall! the ride from orchard to city hall only took about 5 minutes! even better than taking the mrt.

we walked around and decided on the handburger. most of the outlets at the basement of raffles city were closed for renovations, so there were little to pick from. when we reached our destination, i was quite wary (even after my sis's reassurance) as the place was rather empty.

the concept of the restaurant was quite unique. the chairs looked like overturned boxes and the tables were long and ran length-wise across the restaurant (a fuss free arrangement to accommodate for big groups of people).

even the menu was delightful. colourful papers clipped to a board, each illustrating a different portion of the menu. the second page of the menu is what we found what we wanted--set meals. you can get a side/salad and a drink for an extra $4 or 6, depending on the side you order.

my sis's side of duck confit burger, onion rings and ice lemon tea. she said her duck was very soft and had the texture of pulled pork. the onion rings were good but too oily. the dip that came with the rings were spicy and i used it with my beef (because my beef was rather tasteless).

i had the handburger original, caesar salad and lychee mint crush (an additional $3.50 on top of the set meal price). i probably ate my whole week's supply of vegetables yesterday.

the caramelised onions were divine, it was a pity they gave so little. also, the waiter didn't ask for the doneness of my meat and it came well done, too tough for me. the salad comprised of lots of stalks and a generous helping of bacon and egg. the lychee mint crush was good but nothing memorable.

i will probably return for a hang out with friends or a quick meal, but it wouldn't be my first choice.

lunch + love cuts with qi

had lunch with qi today at jp! we went ambush and they had set lunch till 3pm, which was really fortunate as i only reached at 2.50pm. a full set of soup, main course and drinks at an affordable price of $9.90 :) despite the fact that our stomachs were bulging, we still went for dessert. she likes fen yuan too!

after the filling meal, we slipped into the cinema just in time for the movie--love cuts. if you know me, you would know that a chinese movie is never a first choice for me. however, qi had already watched go the distance and this was one of the few movies that were available. she requested for tissue even before the movie started. i had only two pieces.

in the end, both of us needed tissue--one for each of us and it wasn't enough. up till a third of the movie, we were already tearing. from that moment on, there was hardly a breather for us and definitely no "dry" moments in between. even the littlest jokes slipped in started our waterworks. some parts actually reminded me of the loving relationship between my uncle and late aunt. probably one of the best local productions, next to home run.

marina barrage

a family outing to marina. first we hit marina barrage for some kite flying, before heading to the singapore flyer.

and prior to exercising, we need some energy! so we stopped at the gallery cafe for some finger food and drinks.

beautiful scenery from the cafe.

the special (and not very cheap) drink--apple and sour plum. not enough sour plum. as you can see the sour plum only consisted of the power on top.

calamari rings which were only average.

however, the chicken wings... yum! piping hot and really juicy. yes, juicy not oily! the moment you tear the wings apart, the juice just oozes out!

so after filling our stomach, we went off to work it off...

look at how crowded the place was. the moment i stepped out of the elevator, i was shocked. it was almost impossible to fly a kite without cutting into someone's line or run into someone. congested places are not conducive for flying kites.

it's even worse when our kite is so humongous!

in the end, after many failed attempt we had to give up flying our huge octopus and fly the little kite for adri since she was so excited about it.

following that, we headed to the flyer for dinner but it was so crowded. even the pricey restaurants were full! so we gave up and went home.

it was an exhausting day.
