straitskitchen @ grand hyatt singapore

my hod treated us to dinner at straitskitchen. i was so excited! my first ever treat and i've heard really good reviews from my colleagues who had been there before.

a few of us went early to scope the fare offered. i came prepared, wearing my leggings (expandable compared to jeans) and my asos baby-doll tunic (to hide my tummy).

we had ourselves a table tucked into the corner of the restaurant, which was a good thing since we were making so much noise joking around.

the first thing we did there (other than trying... oops looking at the food) was to order drinks. hmmm... it wasn't very cheap. they had typical local drinks like barley, sugarcane, teh tarik, but the price almost quadruple the usual cost, about $6-8.50 per drink.

the choices displayed were wide-ranging! best of all, they were placed into sections like local delights, northern indian, noodles, etc.

i tasted the laksa and prawn noodles. the laksa was a bit diluted and the soup of the prawn mee salty.

satay was considered a must-try by most of my colleagues. we had mutton and beef, both were delicious! tender palatable portions.

rojak was delicious too! the you tiao (dough fritter) was grilled, crispy and toasty warm.

and of course, what's most important for me was the dessert spread! and i was seriously tempted to try everything but my tummy didn't have enough space.

clockwise from top left: pear lotus dessert, goreng pisang (banana fritters) and or-nee (yam paste). the pear lotus dessert was yummy! a bit sweet for my colleagues, but i loved it. the goreng pisang was seriously huge! we had to share. the or-nee was dreamy but the portion too small.

there were many kuehs which were sweet and heavenly. just nice to just pop it into your mouths.

the very last item i had was the ice-cream. they had many local fruit flavours, but i chose only two scoops--durian and sweet corn. the durian is probably one of the best durian ice-cream i ever had! i still prefer the sweet corn ice-cream you can get from ice-cream carts along the road.

there were so many other dishes that i have not taken pictures of. will bring my family here for a meal when pay comes in!

potc + greenhouse cafe + ikea

just to start the post off, i have been shopping lots and here's a recent buy from lovebonito!

loving the chiffon purple prints. i actually bought the whole set that was on the model, including the tube dress! sometimes when blogshops match a perfect outfit, it's hard for consumers to resist.

also, if you noticed, i dyed my hair black! rather sick of brown hair already, so it's here to stay :)

below is sis with her f21 lace top:

she loves lace. bought the top some time ago, but never wore it until that day.

ok, on to what i did that day. first we watched pirates of the caribbean: on stranger tides. as expected, johnny depp was an awesome actor, the plot was thrilling and the new characters just added to the intrigue.

can't wait for the next edition of the potc franchise!

after the movie, we went to greenhouse cafe. always noticed it but never crossed my mind that it would serve main courses as i thought it was more of a cafe. to my surprise, the place actually serves steak as well!

i tried set a, prawn paste chicken pasta. all sets come with soup of the day and dessert (which i opted not to have as it was watermelon).

the mushroom soup was delicious. doesn't taste like soup out of a box. furthermore, i'm not really a fan of mushrooms, so the fact that they blended the mushrooms into the soup instead of putting in slices of mushrooms was a draw for me.

the pasta was nothing special, just plain tomato sauce. the chicken was done perfectly, however it's an item that you would rather have at a tsi-cha place rather than at a western restaurant.

i was quite disgusted by the sweetness of the soda. can't really remember what was the exact soda i ordered, but i felt like i was drinking syrup. i didn't even finish half of it.

following dinner, was supper at ikea!

absolutely best chicken wings ever.

since i had dinner already, i ordered peach tea and cinnamon roll. the roll was nice but i bit hard. would be better if it was toasted in the oven before serving.

oooo... one last thing! i bought a bag to store the shawl my sis knitted for me and it bears a striking resemblance to my hamster!

ootoya, clementi mall. unpleasant experience.

ootoya has opened a branch in clementi mall, which is so cool because of the close proximity. however, i doubt i will be patronising from it again because of the horrendous service received. ootoya at orchard central was so much better.

just some examples of how atrocious the service was:

  1. we were waiting to be seated as was stated by the sign posted at the entrance. almost all the staff observed that we were waiting and instead of seating us, they merely spared us a glance and ignored us. the restaurant wasn't even half full. it was only when the line got longer that they approached us.
  2. there was a server, dave, who seemed to be in a bad mood that day and it obviously showed. he had a perpetual frown and took our orders without really acknowledging us. we had to ask him to repeat the orders to be sure he got everything down.
  3. although there was free refill of green tea, we had to keep requesting for the refill because they either did not take notice or couldn't be bothered.
  4. we ordered desserts and despite the fact that they were the same dessert, they were served one at a time and a rather long period of waiting in between each.
  5. while we were paying for our meal, we realised that they have a high-tea set which starts at 2.30pm (we arrived around 3pm). however, they did not notify us nor did they place any sign on the tables or at the entrance. only when we left at 4.30pm did they place the sign at the entrance.
how this is going to generate positive feedback and attract patronage, i am not sure. it is definitely giving a bad name to such a popular restaurant. the management had better do something quickly about its staff before they start losing whatever clientele they have.

food presentation and taste were just as good as the orchard central branch. sad to say i can't say the same about the service.
