universal studios singapore

and our journey begins

finally, i had time to upload my pictures and blog about my trip to universal studios with my cousins during the good friday long weekend.

we met up bright and early on saturday as we were hoping to miss the queues. it was rather empty when we got there by bus. there is a direct bus (rws8) from the bus stops outside harbourfront and vivocity. it's $2 round trip and you only need to tap in and out on the journey into sentosa.

the bus entered this huge underground maze and eventually dropped as off at the entrance to resort world.

there are signs to guide you up to ground level and as you surface, you will see the entrance to the theme park!

don't have to worry about not bringing enough cash. there are many atms around, outside and inside the theme park. some of the shops and restaurants also accept credit card. also, if you find that you're carry too many unnecessary items, just drop them in one of the many lockers throughout the theme park (although that might be a pricer option).

as we got our tickets online, each of us had a printout. to exit and re-enter the park, you need to retain your ticket as well as get your hand stamped on the way out.

it was a pity the two main rides (battlestar galactica cyclon and human) were closed. but we got a $10 dining voucher and a $5 retail voucher each as compensation. there was no minimum spending needed. if you choose to eat at a quick service outlet, the $10 would more or less cover your meal. i used the $5 retail voucher to buy a pen ($4.90) for souvenir.

hotel michael, one of the expensive hotels of resorts world, just a stone's throw away.

guess the ride?

clue 1:

clue 2:

yes it's the jurassic park rapids adventure. definitely a ride i'll never forget.

before going onto the ride, i was hesitating, to wear my raincoat or not? my cousins told me what was the point of sitting a water ride when you don't get wet at all? i was persuaded by them until i saw the people getting out of the ride. some were really dry while the rest were soaked, so i put on my raincoat again.

the three of us who were wearing raincoats sat together (the raft was separated into groups of three). as we were floating along, the raft kept turning. we didn't know who was going down the slope backwards. suddenly, the raft stopped and lo and behold, the door was behind the three of us. so we quickly checked that we were adequately covered before down we went.

we were drenched. the raft was flooded and at least half our calves were covered in water. the three of us looked up and everyone else was dry. yes, how unbelievable. my cousins who tried to persuade me not to wear my raincoat were dry and holding on to their stomachs as they guffawed at us. fortunately, i didn't listen to them.

next, we headed to waterworld, which was just next door.

the seats were separated into three zones-- soaked zone, splashed zone and safe zone. we sat in the splashed zone, but didn't get wet at all.

the performance was only ok for me. i think my impression was influenced by my experience at universal studios hollywood. it seemed larger than life there than here.

after that was lunch time!

we tried turkish food. it was really disappointing that the staff there was not well equipped with product knowledge. they couldn't even answer whether it was buffet or ala carte. the restaurant was like a canteen. you take a tray, order what you want, they serve it to you and you move down the line. please make sure you find a seat before ordering!

i wouldn't really recommend my taster platter of pitas, dips, chicken wings, green pea cake and samosa. there were too many pitas and nothing to go with it. felt like i was eating flour for lunch. my cousins on the other hand loved their rice sets.

so feeling like my stomach was still not filled, we had churros!

the sticks were piping hot and super yummy! typical theme park fare.

my conclusion

one thing i really enjoyed there was the shopping. the merchandise and souvenirs were unique and i couldn't decide what to buy. you can see people carrying large bags home with them, almost as if they had a shopping trip instead of a day at the theme park.

if i had to choose one ride as the most memorable (considering that battlestar galactica was closed), it would be revenge of the mummy, an indoor roller coaster at ancient egypt. the high speed coaster was filled with twists and turns andi was tossed in all directions. definitely thrilling!

i will definitely be back when the two main rides are reopened. even if not for that, i will still make a trip down just for shopping :)
