cambodia day 1 (siem reap)

we arrived at siem reap international airport at 9.45am in the morning (cambodia is one hour ahead of singapore). it was a bright and sunny day, perfect start to the trip.

our first stop is at angkor silk farm, under artisans d'angkor. artisans d'angkor is a training school and holds a collection of all the fine arts unique to cambodia, which include silk weaving, stone and wood carving.

mulberry leaves, food for the silk worms.

silk worm cocoon. one cocoon can produce up to 500m of raw silk!

workers boiling the cocoons and unravelling the raw silk.

the colour of raw silk is yellow. these are the various natural dyes used to dye the silk.

workers weaving the silk into bolts of brightly coloured fabrics.

traditional cambodian costumes. if i'm not wrong, one of them is for wedding ceremony.

after visit to the silk farm and lunch, we checked into our hotel, somadevi angkor hotel. looks old and small in this picture but it's actually quite spacious. the toilet is brightly lit and roomy. recently renovated, it houses a bath tub and a shower stall.

next, we headed to another part of artisans d'angkor, which is the stone and wood carving centre.

they also do silk painting over there.

some of the workers there are deaf, so there is poster on the wall which show certain sign language gestures if you wish to communicate with them.

carving of buddha and naga (many headed snake god) by a worker. they have many beautiful statues (stone and wood) of buddha and elephants in the shop.

our next stop is at tonle sap (translated into big lake), where we took a river cruise to see the floating village.

this is the floating basketball court! isn't it cool? the villagers really adapt different aspects into their lives.

our captain for the boat ride.

shop-boats which are common on the lake. they also have floating restaurants.

we visited a mini crocodile enclosure in the floating village.

love the reflection in parvin's sunglasses.

bird's eye view of the village (it's actually pretty big).

local beer, which i think my dad is raring to try.

there are several signs along the lake. have no idea what this mean. they also have a no overtaking sign.

back to the hotel to wash up before heading out for dinner. too bad we didn't bring our swimming costumes, they hotel has a really nice pool.

our hotel is in the heart of the city centre, with restaurant, shops, supermart and even a money changer nearby.

we had dinner at amazon angkor restaurant. they offer a wonderful buffet spread with khmer dance perfomances while you eat. dinner is from 6-9pm and performances start from 7.30pm.

they have 3 buffet counters, serving over 40 dishes, so you don't have to worry about the crowd.

there are 5 dances accompanied by singer and musicians using traditional instruments. the dancers are captivating and i'm so amazed by the flexibility of their hands (apsara gestures). one thing to note is that it is open air dining so there are lots of mosquitoes. do go prepared.
