jai thai

i had another cross country trip--went to braddell for thai food. my sis had to collect her standard chartered running kit from the business times and while she was working there she kept raving about the thai food, so i was all for traipsing all the way there to try it.

jai thai is not really accessible, as it is located within an industrial estate. the restaurant is comfortably nested among a row of shophouses. the best way there is probably via taxi or car; hence it was fortunate that my dad decided to give us a lift.

the interior is small, cosy and, very important to people who are afraid of birds like me, air-conditioned. according to my sis, it is usually very crowded during lunch hour (people have to queue up outside). however, it was raining today, so the restaurant was quite empty when we got there.

jai thai offers a variety of food. you can choose from the ala carte menu or the all-day set menu, which is separated into individual and family sets, ranging from $5.80 for an individual set to $99 for a family set for 10 people. all three of us settled for individual sets, which came with a drink and dessert.

you have a choice of lime juice, iced tea, coffee, tea or chinese tea. we chose lime juice and iced tea. the lime juice was not very sour, kind of like sweet lemonade. the iced tea was actually iced lemon tea.

my dad ordered the tom yum noodle set, $6.80. the noodles came with a generous amount of seafood. it wasn't as spicy as the one at thai express, as my dad wasn't perspiring as usual.

i had the pineapple rice set a, $7.80, which had a little bit of everything--pandan chicken, thai spring roll, fish with chilli sauce and thai green curry. it's a good set to start off with seeing that it was my first visit and i got to try some of their popular dishes. didn't really fancy the pineapple rice and spring roll though.

my sis who had already tried almost everything, knew what she was going to have beforehand--green curry set, $6.80. while the serving may look small here, in reality it was quite big. my sis had difficulty finishing it and my dad had to help.

last but not least, dessert--agar agar. the agar agar had bits of coconut in it. it was nice to be able to clear our palate with something refreshing after all that rich and creamy food.

you know what's the best thing about jai thai? the food is cheap and good, the place is clean and air-conditioned and there is no gst or service charge! but, the downside to it is that it is out of the way. will i ever go back there again? only if someone sends me or if i'm (rarely) in that area.
