hong kong day 1: the peak and ifc mall woke up at an ungodly hour of 4am to make it for our check in at 5.30am. thanks to the best daddy in the world who sacrificed his sleep to send us to the airport, we didn't have to wake up any earlier or spend a huge amount on taxi fare. when we got to the airport it was packed. we could hardly find a place to sit at macs! sis and matt had to wait for a seat while parv and i went to queue up at the check in counter. the flight was 3.5 hours and after a rather bumpy ride on tiger airways, we reached hong kong! the first thing we did there was to grab a bite at this dessert place at the airport called hui lau shan, my sis read a lot about. it was fantastic! they have a variety of desserts and drinks, mostly made of mango. healthier choice and a tasty one at that. in addition to one of the mango pomelo sago drinks, i ordered this mango mochi. the mochi part was rather thick but the ripe, sweet mango in the centre made everything perfect. the drink was not something thirst quenching, i had to buy a bottle of water to wash the taste away. parv, sis and matt ordered this dessert which was made up of mango puree, mango ice cream and glutinous rice balls, one of the popular choices by customers and after tasting it, i could see why. upon finishing our food and purchasing our airport express tickets and octopus cards, we headed for our hotel. if you were to purchase the airport express ticket alone, it costs hk$100, however if you were to get it in groups of 2 or 4, it costs hk$80 and hk$62.50 respectively. it is a quick way of getting to the town centre. the airport express stops at 5 stops--asiaworld expo, airport, tsing yi, kowloon and hong kong. we alighted at hong kong station and took the mtr to wan chai. that was when the octopus card came in handy. it's like our ez-link card, you just need to tap it to enter the station and you can top it up any time. look at how roomy it is. you can just stretch your legs out and there is a section for you to stash your luggage next the entrance, so you can just grab it as you go. there is an indicator in every cabin which tells you how close you are to your stop. the light will blink as the journey progresses and you can roughly gauge how close you are to your destination. no food and drinks are allowed on board. wi-fi is available. we changed train at hong kong-central station and exited at wan chai mtr station. you can imagine how lost we looked. everyone was walking in all directions and the four of us just stood in the middle of the street with our luggage until some kind soul pointed us in the right direction. our hotel is a mere 5 minutes walk from the mtr station. it shares a building with other companies, a mahjong club and a restaurant. jj hotel takes up the 9th to 12th floors. our rooms were on the 12th floor. in all honestly, i really loved the location and design of the room. if i were to visit hong kong again, i would definitely choose this hotel. by mtr, it is close to almost all popular tourist destinations. you may rent vcds from the lobby on the 9th floor at hk$50 for two. also, the hotel provides daily newspapers when their staff tidies the room. we went for lunch at a thai restaurant two streets down from our hotel. it's really weird to see a thai restaurant winning awards for its hainanese chicken rice, so i decided to try it. the rice was a bit too mushy, the chicken average but the chilli was a winner. we went to the peak after that. the tram up was almost vertical. i have no idea how people climbed up last time, it was so steep. the view was very nice though. the peak offers a bird's eye view of hong kong. it's a place you can't miss if you visit hong kong. there are many shops and restaurants at the peak. we only tried one--berrygood. it's a yoghurt place, where you get your yoghurt soft serve and you can choose toppings. i didn't find it anything special as we have similar shops in singapore. the peak has high powered binoculars which you can actually use to look into people's houses! that was probably not why it was placed there for, but you can actually see what people are doing in their apartments. pretty scary huh? free stalker tools. it was evening when we went down and time to do some shopping. we went to ifc mall nearby! it is pretty similar to paragon of singapore. some rather high end shops and branded names. i loved the basement! they had this japanese supermarket where we bought lots of fruit juice and fruits. we had macs for dinner, which quickly became a staple during our trip as it was one of the cheapest alternatives there. a full first day! went back to rest for day 2.
