3 eateries: tampopo, megumi & gelato art

spent my new year's eve in two! first part of the day with my clique for some japanese food at tampopo, liang court and later with my family for more japanese food at megumi, sunset way. for someone who doesn't really like japanese food, that's a lot in one day!

my clique finally met at 2pm, an hour after the stipulated meeting time, thanks to extremely clear instructions and good time management. famished, those who were earlier ordered first.

neatly wrapped red velvet cupcakes by nessa! she's so sweet and is kind of the resident baker of our clique (recall her wonderful christmas chocolate caramel tart). the cupcake helped me tide over my hunger till the ramen arrived.

the food took forever to come...

lychee cooler. rather small cup, lychee syrup tasted a bit different from the usual kind you get at most cafes, more subtle, not so in-your-face.

for those who ordered ramen, which was most of us, we chose all the different kind of soups available--miso, shio, shoyu and spicy. according to angelo, japanese food expert, shio means salt and shoyu means soy sauce. and trust me, they are really salty.

bowls come in two sizes, the mini ones which cost about $5 lesser than the normal sized ones, a nice size if you are not very hungry. noodles also came in two types--thick and chewy (traditional kind) and thin and hard.

verdict: poor service. the staff didn't really take notice of the state of the table until we are about to clear out. had to constantly call them to refill the green tea. ramen had variety but if you want a quality one at clarke quay, try marutama at central.

was actually quite pissed that my father was indecisive about dinner. in the end, we didn't have reservations at any restaurant and had to spend time finding a place to eat. in the end, my mum decided to take up her friend's suggestion of trying sunset way.

there were so many restaurants there and they were full. we had a hard time deciding what to eat and even then, whether they even had space for us.

megumi was crowded, but the dinner crowd was fading as we got a seat.

sis's chicken cutlet rice. i was persuading her to order their garlic fried rice. as we entered the restaurant, we saw a plate of it being served, smelled damn good. sadly, my persuasive skills need work. the cutlet was crisp and golden brown, yet tender and juicy inside. would have loved more curry!

my diy beef hot plate. got to choose between australian, us and japanese beef. i settled on us tenderloin. but seriously, i wouldn't know the difference! the beef was salty. i went through two fuels and quickly cooked all my beef before they banned me from the restaurant from consuming too many fuels.

sashimi platter (6 kinds) $48. my mum managed to got them to switch octopus to swordfish (her favourite). they were thickly sliced, but she still preferred sushi tei.

unagi maki. of which i didn't eat any.

vanilla fried ice-cream. one of the must-tries, according to online review (the advent of technology! we checked websites the moment we sat down). would have liked it if they had served it on a plate with knife and fork. it was hard to eat it in a bowl.

after dinner, we walked along the shops and came across dessert at gelato art.

the owner was very friendly and let us try many flavours. he recommended the liquor ones. what's so great about the place is the price. at most ice-cream stalls, the liquor ones are always priced higher, but at gelato art, all flavours cost only $2.50!

this is only half of the many flavours available there!

mum had all three liquor flavours--rum & raisin, summer wine and xo cranberry--for $7.50. the liquor wasn't very strong to fell you, just enough to get the flavour across. absolutely adore summer wine!

sis had the apple crumble special with a scoop of ice-cream for $6. apple crumble was warm, just a hint of sourness from the apples and raisins.

verdict: will be back for more! what do you expect? quality and quantity here!
