day 3: borobudur to dieng plateau to jogja

my sis and dad got up at 4am, intending to view the sunrise from borobudur. the moment they stepped out of their rooms they were hijacked by people asking if they wanted to buy sunrise tickets. quite scary. guess you can't sneak up there with a torchlight by yourself. the sky was already lighting up, but it was very cloudy, so my sis decided not to get the sunrise tickets.

she came back into the room and i was still awake (woke up because my dad decided to give us a morning call and i had to get out of bed to answer it). thus, armed with cameras, we went exploring the hotel grounds.

this picture was taken around 5am. it was still cloudy after the sun had risen.

warning: gruesome picture ahead!!!

this is or was the poor snail my sis stepped on because she was looking through her lens and not where she was walking. she started screeching like a mad woman and i had to idea why. until she managed to calm down and told me about the snail (she's afraid of snails).

my sis's film camera, which she loves to use to take portraits.

the smiling cat which was waiting beside our table for scraps.

we checked out around 9am, to be picked up for our tour to dieng plateau, which we booked on the first day at ari tours & travel. we got an apv for ourselves, as well as a guide and driver.

the drive to dieng took about 3 hours and it was very scenic. you see lots of paddy fields and terraces. the place reminded me of vietnam.

this is the tour guide with my parents at the ticketing counter. she's really young! only 18 and she has been working in this line for about a year.

this is the map to show where we were. we paid to see the 7 coloured lake (though we managed to count only 4 colours) and several meditation caves, which we found out later that we could not enter.

the weather was cooling and breezy. was a welcomed change from the hot and humid weather. definitely wasn't a chore to walk the path adjacent to the lake.

my uncle, mum and aunt being funny. there was a monkey chained to a tree near the exit. it was holding on to its butt and my uncle got the idea to do the 'speak no evil' (uncle), 'see no evil' (mum), 'hear no evil' (aunt) and 'do no evil' (monkey) thing.

next on the itinerary was the hot spring. you could smell the sulphur from the carpark.

it was boiling, bubbling mud. and we saw plastic bottles in the hot spring and they were not melted at all! imagine how degrading plastic is to the environment.

from the hot springs, we took a short ride down the mountain to see the ruins of some temples.

there were some kids learning martial arts beside the ruins and my mum decided to join in the fun.

we had lunch at dieng restaurant before heading back to jogja. the food was cold and almost no variety. but we found really good sweet potato chips for 11,000rp (sgd$1.65) there! couldn't find the same brand they carried or anything as good during our trip.

we reached jogja after dark and checked into nusaniara hotel, near asia afrika hotel. you can either stay in musty rooms with renovated toilets or renovated rooms with old toilets or deluxe rooms with no sinks. my sis and i chose the first. think it's a trend that they don't maintain their hotels well in jogja. if you want a good stay, you have to find a new hotel (which is rare) or pay dear prices for a famous chain hotel like ibis hotel.

had dinner at mcdonalds at the shopping centre opposite jalan malioboro. can't remember the name, none of us took it down. they had triple cheeseburger which most of us ordered. besides that, they had new flavours for mcflurry like caramel crunch and coffee, but the cups were smaller.

after eating, we got back to the hotel. we were all exhausted and we still had a long day tomorrow.
