gusttimo di roma

i received $100 capitaland vouchers for my birthday. after much consideration, i decided to spend it on food at ion (what a surprise huh). i searched hungrygowhere and upon reading raving reviews, further confirmed by the glowing appraisal by camemberu, i settled on gusttimo di roma, an italian restaurant.

we had a hard time finding the restaurant, even with the unit number because we assumed that the place was situated indoors. i've learnt never to make assumptions again! we approached the concierge and a guy directed us outside. imagine eating outdoors in the sweltering heat, with only ceiling fans and an air cooler which could only blow from one angle. it was such a turn off and we haven't even started eating yet.

before departing for the restaurant, i was already mentally prepared for the high prices, but my parents were shocked. they felt that it was more like a cafeteria and wasn't really worth paying such exorbitant prices.

mum's ribeye, $32, a chef's recommendation (on a separate menu). it was pretty decent but pales in comparison with our recent experience at durty nelly's. the beef at durty nelly's was nicely done, of a better cut (tenderloin), only half the price and probably double the size.

dad had the crab aglio olio, $19, which is an acceptable price if it didn't taste like fried mee. i do not eat seafood so i based this on my mum's and dad's critique. my dad's rather fussy about his aglio olio and he was complaining about his pasta the whole time. he prefers the ones at tcc and cedele.

we had the chicken caesar salad, $12, to share. it was the redeeming grace of the whole meal. the serving of chicken was generous and the greens were leafy (sounds bimbotic, but i hate eating stalks).

my grilled chicken sandwich, $18. yes, bread for $18! with the same chicken served in the salad. how original. the only reason i ordered it was because it looked so tantalizing in camemberu's blog.

it sounds like my experience was totally negative, but it wasn't totally that. the servings there were really huge and their presentation was perfect. the combination of colours made the food beautiful. however, while we make our first impression based on sight (as i did through pictures), it's pointless if the food doesn't match up.
