paradise inn after hearing so much about taste paradise and humbly acknowledging my spending limit, i headed for the next best thing--paradise inn. it's a more economical alternative presented by the company. what's even better is that one of its branches is just a stone's throw away--west coast plaza! seeing that it was just mum and me, we didn't order a lot, so this probably isn't a very good gauge of the standard of the restaurant. one dish that we usually order at any chinese restaurant--sambal kang kong. you can actually never go wrong with that, even if it isn't cooked well. the kang kong here isn't too spicy or salty and the vegetable has absorbed the unique taste of dried shrimps. i thought it would be tastier if the sambal was hotter. most restaurants offer plain rice as a staple. paradise inn offers steamed rice AND sweet potato porridge. needless to say, we picked the less common one. the porridge is the more watery variety that you find at teochew restaurants. the water has the savouriness of the sweet potato is a good accompaniment to the dishes. the only meat dish we ordered--dong bo rou (pork). it's a fatty dish that is served with this thick sweet sauce. most people order it for the skin (like my mum). i thought it looked too gelatinous and greasy for my liking. i was scraping off all the fat and skin to get to the meat. a bit heavy for two, would have been great for a group of four. last but not least.... dessert! i'm partial to yam paste and this is no exception. one thing special about the yam paste here is that they include bits of water chestnut. so, with every bite, you get a bit of sweetness and crunchiness. what a perfect way to end off a meal.
