ah yat dim sum & charly t's my mum called her family out for lunch last week and it ended up being my aunt's dim sum treat at ah yat abalone restaurant at grand pacific hotel. the restaurant and hotel are surprisingly near bugis junction! with a fixed parking rate of $3.50/entry on sundays, we went over to bugis junction for a shopping jaunt after lunch. anyway, more about the food. the restaurant spans two levels and not on consecutive floors. we had to take the lift to the 4th floor to get to the dining area. it was like a small elongated ballroom when we got there. the service was prompt and first-rated. when reservations were made, we asked for two baby chairs and the chairs were actually secured with ropes so they wouldn't topple over. xiao long bao. some of our clumsy fingers made the gravy drip even before the delicious dumplings entered our mouths. as usual, be careful when handling these delicate morsels. front: fried shrimp rolls. back: custard buns. the custard was fluid and running, but i felt that there was quite little of the filling. bosses at vivocity is still at the top of my custard bun hit list. interesting variation of chang fen. instead of the usual shrimp or barbequed pork wrapped chang fen, this one has beancurd. the innermost layer is soft, middle crunchy and outermost delicate. an awesome contrast of texture. peking duck at an extremely reasonable price of $38. egg tarts were a bit of a let down. they were served lukewarm. obviously having left at the side for a while before it was served. after shopping, we picked sis up and headed on to charly t's for dinner. this was our second visit. and a rather costly one at that. here are some of the new items that we tried. carne asada beef skewers $16. according to the waitress, this one has more "spices" compared to the moroccan one, which is marinated with herbs. the moroccan one was definitely better and more flavourful. ice cream sandwich $7. not really worth the price. similar to the kaya ice-cream, it melted really quickly. the sandwich rapidly became a soggy mess. can't believe i actually paid $5 to eat this pandan tasting ice cream. i would have rather splurged the money on haagen dazs or ben and jerry's. bitter orange square. i have no idea what to say about this. it wasn't bitter. the citrus taste didn't come through for me. it was warm and rather cheesy. weird. in the end, my dad bought the moroccan stick again, because it was that good. that's all for now :) |
