day 5: bromo to jogja had to drag ourselves out of our cosy beds at 3am to catch the jeep ride at 3.30am up the mountain to see the sunrise. we were cautioned that it would be very cold, so we layered on all our tees and even brought along the hotel blankets just in case. six seems to be a good number because once again, we had a jeep to ourselves. my sis was quite pissed with my uncle because he was plodding along. during the drive to the viewpoint, the sky was lighting up and she missed capturing the colour changes. the viewpoint was freezing!!! my fingers were numbed and i was so afraid i was going to drop my camera. we were not prepared, as we didn't intend to visit bromo, so i was only clad in layers of t-shirts (plus a jacket) and sandals. i was really shaking the whole time i was up there. gloves would really come in handy. as usual, my sis took a long time taking pictures, so dad and i started eating breakfast. people were staring at me because i was wrapped up in blankets like a mummy while stuffing myself with bread. by the time my sis finished taking her pictures, the sky was fully lit and the viewpoint rather deserted. this was taken at another viewpoint along the way to the crater. our jeep with the word 'daytona' splashed across the windscreen. not really conducive for taking pictures from the interior. the jeep parked about a kilometre from the steps up to the crater. we can either choose to trek to the steps or hire a horse. thank god we decided to take the horse because we had to climb 250 steps! and the trek was uphill and very sandy! you can see all the horses from up there. they are the little specks at the bottom right hand corner. mount bromo crater. still smoking. apparently there is a legend behind it. at the end of the 15th century, a princess started a separate state with her husband. the state prospered, but the ruling couple did not have children. so they climbed mount bromo to pray to the gods who requested the last child to be sacrificed. they ended up having 24 children, but when the 25th and last child was born, the princess refused to do the sacrifice. the gods threatened the area with fire and brimstone, until she finally sacrificed the child. after the child was thrown into the crater, the locals heard the voice of the child ordering an annual ceremony to be performed on the volcano. the ceremony is still held today. it was about 9am when we reached yoschi's guesthouse. the weather was back to a comfortable temperature. we had breakfast, which guess what? was mee goreng or nasi goreng again. i am so swearing off those for a month. most of the guests checked out at 10am to return to jogja or bali. seeing that we opted for the night ride back, we had until 4pm to kill. after everyone left, we took turns bathing at the public hot shower. the shower was fueled by a butane heater, so it was sometimes hot and cold, making it hard to shower. after bathing, we decided to walk around, but there wasn't much to see. so we just lounged around the area and read our books. dad wanted to take a nap but there were so many flies that sis and i had to wrap him up in our shawls for him to have a peaceful nap. my sis the fly swatter. she murdered 3 flies with her book. it was back down the mountain in the same rusty bus and waiting for another 2.5hours for our mini bus back to jogja. we passed time by playing bingo and eating dinner. sis, uncle and aunt said in the middle row so they were luck to have leg rests. for those sitting at the back (dad, mum and i), we could recline our seats all the way but we had no place to put our legs. felt really uncomfortable the whole night. |
