day 1: singapore to kuala lumpur

we caught the 11.30am airasia flight to kl. i have to say it's the worst plane journey i have ever taken. the takeoff was shaky and the plane constantly dipped and rattled. couldn't sleep even if i wanted too. we were clinging on to the arm rests the whole trip (aka fearing for our lives). the staff couldn't even serve meals during the short trip.

upon reaching the airport, we took the skybus to kl sentral. there was an option while booking the airasia flight online for the bus ride. if you have not chosen the option, you can catch any bus service for 9rm (sgd$3.70) per ride to the city centre. it was about an hour's bus ride.

the skybus was relatively old but very clean. as you can see, the bus reflects the colour of airasia- all decked out in red. the buses come quite frequently, as soon as one is filled up, another one takes its place, so you don't have to worry about the waiting time.

we then took a taxi from kl sentral to our hotel. as you can see, the taxi has regulations. no eating, drinking, rubbish or public display of affections. and unless you take a cab all the way from the airport, all buses stop at kl sentral. the ride to the hotel took about 10 minutes (depending on traffic and peak hour).

you can purchase a coupon from the taxi booth (this is to ensure that there is no touting and prices are regulated). it cost us 13rm (sgd$5.40). taxi is a regular mode of transport in kl. the cab drivers usually jack up the prices, so be sure you don't pay more than 12rm (sgd$5) for a ride in the city.

we checked into parkroyal hotel immediately before heading out. love our hotel. the hotel lobby was brightly lit and our room was spacious, newly renovated and clean. we chose the deluxe king room, which came with 2 double beds.

we booked the room for 350rm (sgd$144) but the hotel offers many promotions such as advance purchase (book 14 days in advance and you get 10% off) and for uob card holders, book online and receive discounts and complimentary breakfast for 2.

the location of the hotel was good. right smack in the middle of all the shopping malls (just opposite berjaya times square and next to sungei wang plaza) and next to the bukit bintang monorail stop. even if you were to hit other places, just hop onto the monorail.

we took the free shuttle offered by the hotel to klcc and had lunch at a&w, which as you know is no longer in operation in singapore. the curly fries was cold and soggy, not at all like my fond memories. they don't even have coney dogs that day. a&w with no coney dogs? it's like mcdonalds with no big mac! however, the root beer float was just like i remembered.

we also caught a movie-- law abiding citizen, starring gerald butler and jamie foxx. pretty good movie, which is better than i can say for the golden village theatre. the lights were on for the first 5 minutes of the movie and everyone was wondering whether they watch movies with the light on in malaysia. i think the noise caught the attention of the operator and he then remembered to switch it off. and also, they probably cut some of the scenes because some of the scenes were quite disjointed.

all in all, the shops at klcc were pretty high end, akin to paragon in singapore. they have furla, tiffany & co., coach and some more affordable ones like accessorize, topshop, mango and zara. all shops you can easily find in singapore, and thus no need to catch a plane ride to kl for all that. if you want to shop, just do it in singapore. other than the shops mentioned, local shops (excluding vincci, great shoes) were dated and i didn't buy anything.
