hakata japanese restaurant imagine the power of words. immediately after uploading my previous post, my mum asked me to shut down my computer because she was taking the whole family out to dinner! so i hurriedly closed my windows and out we went. we tried a newly opened japanese restaurant at jurong superbowl. it's only accessible by car. if you were to take the bus, i'm sure there are a few; it wouldn't be very convenient though. the restaurant was brightly lit and had its own sashimi bar. it was relatively empty when we got there but tables were filled as we left. kajiki and salmon sashimi, $30. didn't feel that the salmon was fresh at all. very fishy taste. i didn't have the kajiki but my sis was complaining about the cut of the fish. according to her, there was too much "geng." chicken wings, $8. this has gotta be one of the most expensive and tiny wings i've ever had. five measly wings for eight bucks? i could have enjoyed a filling three course meal at a food court. the wings were crispy but tasteless. my sis ordered prawn tempura with cold soba. she loved the prawns and so did my dad. the noodles weren't fantastic but they weren't bad either. beef teppanyaki, $18. it was an additional $5 for a set, which included rice, soup and a slice of watermelon. the beef was also average and a bit tough. was good with both sauces. one of them actually tasted like chicken rice chilli; didn't know they have that in japan. my dad's inari. the presentation was horrible. the beancurd skin was broken (i turned that side away when i took the picture). chawanmushi, $5. poorly put together. the egg was "holey" and rather hard. looked more like the steamed egg you find in mixed vegetable rice stalls. last but not least, the pork fillet curry rice, $12. the curry was good! i didn't expect the pork to be fried cutlet-style since they have pork cutlet curry rice on the menu. however, it was delicious when dunked into the thick gravy. overall, i would say the experience at hakata was mediocre. the restaurant wasn't started by a japanese and it was pretty obvious. you can get better japanese food at kotobuki, an authentic japanese restaurant, which is located just down the block. hanging out @ havelock road it's been a while since i've updated seeing that school has been hectic from the very first week. haven't been to anywhere new for food or had the time to hang out with friends. hence, i was really glad to meet up with the clique last night. quite surprisingly, everyone made it. the last time we had everyone present was during siyu's birthday, which was about five months ago! i was quite tired after school (stayed till 6.50pm for cca) and would not have gone if angelo hadn't been nice enough to give me a lift. we met up with the rest at a bak kut teh shop along havelock road. and nope, no pictures taken as i forgot to bring my camera. my dad prays at a temple nearby and we have never noticed the place before and would never have if not for tau's recommendation. we ordered quite a lot of food. the pig's blood, stomach, liver, lots of spare ribs, you tiao, mee sua, rice and drinks only added up to $91. quite worth the amount we had in our tummies. later, we went to the wine bar. siyu and i felt under-dressed. in fact, all of us were in shorts and slippers except for tau and sharon. but we had a great time even when we were standing the whole time. tau, sharon and angelo were recommending alcoholic drinks. i loved dreamer and the jelly in it. sweet and the alcohol content wasn't very high. we ended the night with two rounds of shooters (apple and sour plum). siyu wasn't feeling well, so lenard, angelo and i walked her to her car. side note: i sat in her car and it was scary. thank god for insurance. anyway, after siyu drove off, the three of us talked for about an hour until my eyes were closing. we split after that and angelo gave me a lift home. made some plans to meet up on tuesday after angelo's exam. it was really great that everyone got together once in a while. we kept reminiscing back to jc times where we had loads of fun, especially teasing siyu. i think i need such meet-ups to keep me sane and relax after a week of seeing crazy students. jokes found some really good jokes at william and guy's. need something to cheer me up on a monday morning (ok, almost noon now). anyway, enjoy the great play on words. joke #1 a linguistics professor was lecturing his class one day. 'in English', he said, 'a double negative forms a positive. in some languages, though, such as Russian, a double negative is still a negative. however, there is no language wherein a double positive can form a negative.' A loud voice from the back of the room piped up, 'Yeah, right.' joke #2 robert went to his lawyer and said, 'i would like to make a will but i don't know exactly how to go about it.' the lawyer smiled at robert and replied, 'not a problem, leave it all to me.' robert looked somewhat upset and said, 'well, i knew you were going to take a big portion, but i would like to leave a little to my family too!' joke #3 a policeman spotted a jay walker and decided to challenge him, 'why are you trying to cross here when there's a zebra crossing only 20 metres away?' 'well,' replied the jay walker, 'i hope it's having better luck than me.' Saturday, January 23, 2010 @ 19:41
a day at vivocity sis and i couldn't agree what to eat today, so we left the house early. we reached vivocity an hour and a half before our movie to have our lunch at two different places. my sis accompanied me while i had my lunch at kim gary and then i returned favour by tagging along when she had hers at soup spoon. kim gary changed their order sheet. they have become environmental unfriendly. different forms for different items. thus, if you order drinks and dessert, you fill in one form. and you need another one for ala-carte, another one for hot stone sets and so on. it was also inconvenient for me as a customer to find the respective forms for the item i wanted to order. in the end, after debating between their new hot plate sets, which look yummy but rather pricey, and the beef tomato spaghetti, i chose the spaghetti. the spaghetti looked really good as the waitress was walking towards our table. the tomato sauce was totally unlike those you have at italian restaurants. it was more like something between sweet and sour, and ketchup. would have enjoyed my meal more if the beef was served warm. next stop, soup spoon. my sis had her filling meal of soup, chicken caesar and ice lemon tea. i ordered the chocolate fudge cake. the cake was huge, soft and spongy. i was taking out my students' essays to mark while i was eating the cake (yes, totally no life and never-ending amount of work). last but not least, the movie! i have got to say the movie was quite entertaining. not much excellent acting, but the movie had some funny characters. it was a good movie to start my weekend off (or to end it, since sunday is lesson planning day). i think i need to have movie saturdays fortnightly. contact lens after seven years of wearing specs, i decided to give contact lens a try. i made an appointment at my optician and got three free trial dailies. my optician was very patient and taught me how to put in and remove my lenses twice. at the beginning, my eyes kept blinking. they were not very big to begin with, so it was hard to slip in the contacts. furthermore, she satook several tries before i managed to put one in. taking out was even harder. couldn't "pinch" my contacts as it wasn't easy to discern the location of the lens. also, as a left-handed, i felt it was more easy to deal with the lens on my left eye rather than right. however, after numerous coaching from the optician and my sis (who was along for support), i managed to put in my contacts after one attempt and take them out with two! i have tried on the second pair. was told to only try the third pair on the day of my next appointment. investiture yeah i graduated today!!! met up with bob and kanch for lunch at jurong point for lunch before heading down for our investiture at nanyang auditorium. i was lucky to be sitting next to mel and near jeannie. can't imagine how boring and awkward the ceremony would be without someone to catch up with and pass time. so happy to be able to meet up with everyone today :) managed to take photos with quite a few of my friends, at least those i managed to get a hold of. the rest were lost among the crowds. kanch and elfie with his new hairstyle. mum who took leave to come down today :) cheeky caijuan who always poke fun at me during gesl. my practicum mates, ivy and ahmad. didn't see delvin and huda. part of bims club. we had lots of fun being dumb! a combination of el and ss class. the founding members of bims club. love you babes! photo-taking session finally over! time to remove that stuffy gown and head on home. ugly eyebrow went to jean yip @ jurong point to trim my eyebrows because they were becoming rather untidy and i wanted to look good for my investiture tomorrow. i'm looking ugly now :( one of my eyebrows is half gone. never going back to jean yip get my eyebrows done. it's so ironic since my intention was to look better and i now look worse. and the shorter eyebrow is on the left side (the very side i was supposed to tilt my head so the professional photographer hired can take a picture). just what i need. a picture to remind me of my ugly eyebrow. guylian chocolate had some problems uploading pictures today. my samsung netbook is already dying on me. simply refuses to connect to my wireless network. i am currently using my dad's laptop (my old laptop) and it's extremely slow. can't even download photoscape, so i have to edit photos using my samsung one and transfer using thumbdrive to my dad's. now, my photos have only been uploaded halfway and the rest isn't cooperating. i am having chocolate craving today and i open the fridge to find 88 belgium chocolate sea shells by guylian! a family friend bought it for my family some time ago and i forgot all about it until i was searching for some chocolate to satisfy my craving. love how the pretty little shells are saturated with think and creamy roasted hazelnut praline filling. i know it's not good for my complexion. presently, i have this really huge zit on my chin, not very photogenic for my investiture on wednesday. i think this is one of the things you regret later. but at the moment, who cares? it's complicated finally had some time to indulge in a movie yesterday night. it was a choice between blind side or it's complicated. both starring my favourite actresses, sandra bullock and meryl streep respectively. however, i was in the mood for a lighter, feel-good movie, so it was meryl streep for me. in the beginning i wasn't quite certain about the movie genre and meryl streep. she has been stepping into more chick flick roles recently and reading the synopsis prior to this movie, it seemed like an ultimate chick flick to me. however, it didn't come as a surprise that she was able to carry the typical chick flick protagonist further than any other actresses had. she injected emotions and depth to a simple role and made the character much more endearing and realistic. the movie also had some really hilarious and heart-rending moments. the most comical person in the movie had to be, not steve martin (he was not funny at all), but john krasinski, the soon-to-be-son-in-law of streep's character. he actually stole the limelight from some of the major characters like alec baldwin and steve martin. a strongly recommended movie :) felt really good after watching it. i miss nie went to nie to collect my graduation gown today. seems like studying was so long ago. time is fickle when you're teaching. it passes really slowly when you're in class and flies by when you're catching a break between lessons. also, in the morning, the alarm clock always seems to sound when you just rest your head on the pillow. this is only the second week of school and it already feels like the fourth. hope it'll get better with time. my friends and i only managed to eat our lunch after collecting our gowns, which was around half past three. you learn a new thing in school. eat while you can, because there is always something to do and you'll never know when's the next time you get to eat something. thus, i have stocked up my cabinets with loads of snacks. at least i'll get to eat something to settle my stomach, no matter how unhealthy it is. saw a few friends today, but didn't really get to talk to anyone besides desmond who was nice enough to give me a ride home. was really tired by the time we were heading home. it's a new day tomorrow. sniff sniff think the flu bug is coming round again. a few of my colleagues had been sniffing yesterday and i'm starting to sniff today too. hope i'll feel better with some adequate rest tonight, which means no sleeping after midnight and waking up at 5.30am. it's a long day for me tomorrow and i still have to collect my graduation gown after school. maybe i can make it home for an afternoon nap. mcdelivery mcdelivery service is appalling. i called in at 9.50pm to order a mcwings meal because i haven't had dinner and the operator told me waiting time was maximum 1 hour. around 10.50pm, i called the hotline again as the food had not arrived. another operator told me the rider left a while ago and should be arriving at my house soon. however, by 11.05pm, the food was still not here. so i dialed the number again. this time, while holding the rider rang the doorbell and when we checked the food was cold. i told the operator that the food was cold and she said she will "make a note that the food arrived cold." so i asked her what was she going to do about it? and she repeated she will make a note. i told her to take the food back and give a new one. all she said was, it was not her problem because the fault was in the restaurant and its rider. i hung up the phone and told the rider to take it back. i am currently still hungry and without sustenance. lazybones it's been a really tiring first week. am so tempted to go for a body massage because i feel that i deserve to pamper myself after being so hardworking. however, i think the lack of sleep have been catching up with me. can't seem to get out of bed. maybe i'll go for a movie tonight instead. iguana it's been a while since i got the time to upload photos. the first week of work has been extremely busy and i really can't wait for friday to come. went out with mike and joyce last weekend for some mexican food at iguana, clarke quay. at first we were pretty lost. nobody bothered to get the address, just remembered that it was at riverside point (yes, obviously nobody learned their lesson from malacca). however, when we arrived, the brightly coloured interior, common to most mexican restaurants, was striking enough to draw our attention. we sat at a high table, convenient for tall people. even after sitting down for a while, i was still blown away by the colours. they were so cheerful and brightened the atmosphere of the place. wonderful nachos. they came in huge bowls, usually a bowl for 4 customers. there were six of us and they gave us two bowls. everyone was munching happily and oblivious to the amount eaten. before we knew it, everything was gone. i think the tasty salsa helped a lot too. needless to say, we were pretty full just by eating the chips. one of the first things i do when i try out a new restaurant is to zoom to the dessert section. i was scanning and i couldn't decide. everything sounded so good, especially the banana chimichangas and green apple enchiladas. lime margarita. ordered a pitcher, they had happy hour. i never really like to drink alcohol and the tequila was very strong (which is actually their main selling point). i would prefer a virgin margarita. also, their margaritas come in very unique flavours like soursop and blueberry. after pondering, we settled on banana chimichangas. it was served with avocado ice cream and caramel sauce. the ice cream was divine! total avocado taste just smells in your mouth. the chimichangas on the other hand had too much flour. overall, it was a really high carbo meal. quesadillas, fajitas, chimichangas. was extremely full after that. i felt that while all the dishes were reasonably priced, less than $20, i still prefer margarita's. the food at margarita's is more professionally prepared and taste unique. most importantly, not all dishes have to have flour there. |
