playing the piano

Source: http://www.flickr.com/photos/flamed/3482174043/

it's been forever since i touched the grand piano at home. but i was feeling so stressed because of work and since it would be illegal to take out my anger on them, i had to resort to banging on the piano keyboard to relieve some pent up frustration. boy, does it feel good! i think the piano and i will be really close friends for some time.

rip cow

COW

19 october 2007- 17 february 2010

cow passed away today.

the poor dear was having skin problems and he was constantly scratching. at the very end, he was weak and sometimes couldn't get up. like fatter baby, he deteriorated very swiftly. i always claimed how handsome cow was. he was the only baby who didn't have or give us any problems; cappu had seizures (and still having) and fatter baby loved to bite everything. cow was great and always eager to get out. he was huge and healthy. however, when he passed, he didn't look at all like he used to be. i think it's better for him to move on, at least he is no longer in discomfort.

:(

i'm officially stuck at home on the second day of cny because i can't find my keys. so much for grand plans :( was supposed to celebrate bryan's birthday today. also, siyu wants to go fish spa and said i need to wear shorts, so i had to change my clothes twice. and i was also supposed to collect bryan's surprise cake for nessa :( eveyone's visiting or enjoying themeselves and i'm stuck at home. so far i have spent my time doing the following:

  1. finished my favourite crystal jade bo luo pineapple tarts. as for lunch, i'll have to order mcdelivery i guess since that doesn't require me to open my door.
  2. watched a bit of a movie on star movies since scv is offering free viewing of all channels during cny
  3. tried to find my keys again
  4. changed out of my going-out clothes as no. 3 was a failure
  5. cheered myself up a bit by counting my angbaos

history excursion

more photos that were rotting in my camera. using the long weekend to catch up on my blog as well as do some last minute spring cleaning before the new year. i was surprised to find so much rubbish and things to donate to the salvation army between my last spring clean (in november) and now. had a bag full of shoes in addition to some apparel which i seldom wear.

anyway, here are some photos of the history trip my school did last month.

in the staffroom with my good friends :) they were obviously prepared for walking, in pe attire and sports shoes.

first stop, old ford factory, where the students had to watch a video clip about the japanese occupation. it was good that the students got to view a part of history and learn about how brutal life was during the period. it made it easier for them to imagine what teachers often describe in history classes.

the place had this big snake and ladder game on the pavement outside. you can purchase a die from the information counter to play it.

some artifacts and information about the japanese occupation.

general arthur percival and general yamashita, both important figures of the war in singapore. if you do put aside the animosity because of how he treated our ancestors, you can actually admire how smart yamashita was; he managed to take control of singapore in a very short period of time.

"banana money." the old japanese government issued money, which became worthless by the time the war was over. the exact amount of "banana money" issued during the occupation is unknown even to the japanese, as these currency did not bear any serial number; only block letters.

next stop, labrador park.

viewpoint at the top of the park.

we were there to see the old fort, where the guns were placed and how ammunition was transported up the hill. we also got a long nature trek out of it.

last stop, kranji war cemetry. the last time i was there was during my own secondary school history excursion. it was still as peaceful as i remembered. it's nice to see that the soldiers who had fought so valiantly for the war finally have a tranquil resting place.

as you read the inscriptions on the gravestones, you do see some of the soldiers who died really young at the age of 16. times were different then, can't imagine boys of my time enlisting at 14 when they whine about the slightest things like being in the hot sun. i hope my school does this kind of trips more often. it was a good lesson out of the classroom for the kids.

malaysia camp

i have been having sore throat this week and i started coughing with phlegm, so decided not to go school so i can visit the doctor today. i am physically ok, but i don't want to strain my voice any longer. it was horrible trying to project my voice and hurting my throat. and so i am up early this morning because i am so used to waking up early and can't go back to sleep.

anyway i decided to use the time to upload some of the photos i took at the camp last week:

on the bus journey to the campsite.

our camping grounds on stilts in the sea. in addition to being windy all day, the place had very lovely sunrises and sunsets. since our campsite was a resort, we had restaurant quality food as compared to teachers from the other levels (we all had different locations depending on the level we teach).

jetty jump where students had to don on life vests and jump into the sea from a certain height. some of the more adventurous students did stunts like back-flips and star-jumps.

night view. we could see singapore from where we were.

ramly burger, saviour to our growling stomachs at night. it was really cheap! less than 3rm for a burger. but because it was very windy, the food turned cold immediately after cooking.

sunrise outside the teachers' dorms.

a last photo before leaving the place :)

off day

had a really off day today. after school, which i finally managed to leave early at 3 plus for some alone time, i decided to pamper myself. went to get a trim at storm and came out feeling (and looking) like i didn't even have my hair cut. the stylist kept insisting that my hair already had a "shape" and he couldn't do anything more to it. thus, i wondered, what's the point of going to the salon? and if according to him my hair was already perfect, why couldn't he have just refunded me my money before he started cutting, instead of me paying the amount and coming out with nothing?

after that, i walked around the mall for a while and did some window shopping. tried a few clothes and shoes but nothing really caught my eye. then, i passed by the cheongsam shop and remembered i had to wear traditional costume for cny celebrations on friday. so i tried on this beautiful hand-embroided 100% cotton top and fell in love with it. and immediately fell out of love when i saw the price. $80. i called my sis and lil for some second opinion. however, both didn't pick up, so i just got it, rationalising to myself that, i could wear it for some dinner in the future. now, i feel like i overspent.

anyway, i decided to perk myself up by finding photos of others having worse days than mine! so here they are:

the last picture wouldn't just be a bad day. it'll be a nightmare that'll scar me for life!

teochew traditional seafood steamboat

this year's reunion dinner was very early as my grandma and aunts are going overseas during chinese new year. it wasn't fantastic but it was definitely memorable for both my sis and i.

my aunt suggested this steamboat restaurant at joo chiat, which doesn't charge service charge or gst.

the restaurant is roomy but they separated us into tables of five. so much for a "reunion" dinner. also, the restaurant should come with a disclaimer. you do not have any choice with regards to the soup. the only soup they serve is shark bone soup and being someone who doesn't eat seafood, it kinds of ruin the whole dinner for me.

my uncle, aunt and my parents doing the ordering.

the only think i was pleased with the meal was the yu shen. the ingredients were very fresh and the salmon was sliced thickly. i felt like i was eating sashimi and not some broken bits of fish you usually have in yu shen.

the waitress pouring in the ingredients before we lo hay.

more about the restaurant. the service was quite bad. they gave us drunken live prawns and did not warn us that they were live and not to cook them immediately. since we did not know the prawns were live, my grandma started throwing them into the pot of boiling soup. fyi, the prawns were not moving because they were probably drunk.

upon falling into the pot, the prawn came alive and splashed around, and hot soup scalded my sis's face. some of the staff were quite concerned and asked about her but the person who served us continually claimed that she already told us that we were supposed to wait a while before cooking the prawns. the restaurant didn't even give us any form of compensation.

after dinner, we went two shops down for some dessert at an italian restaurant. we had previously patronised the restaurant and the found the lunch/dinner sets worth our money and time.

the moment we settled down, my cousin accidentally knocked over a cup of water and wet my shorts. i had to spend the whole time at the restaurant and the whole way back to jurong with wet pants. i looked like i peed on myself.

what most of us ordered was the sampler set. you get to try all three desserts, chocolate lava cake, lavender creme brulee and tiramisu, for a price of $13. personally, i don't find the creme brulee fantastic. the lavender taste is just overpowering and spoils the light creaminess of the dessert.

going over to my grandma's on friday for a more traditional gathering :) sometimes home-cooked food is still the best.

htc tattoo

got a new phone today! was actually deliberating between htc tattoo and nokia 6600i the night before. while htc always had consistently great reviews, i was more interested in the teeny size and 5mp camera 6600i had to offer. however, many users had brought up the flimsiness of 6600i's sliding function and they were afraid the phone would break sooner or later. so 6600i went out the window.

while we were at m1 waiting for our turn, my sis thought i should consider htc touch2 since it was just a top up of $50. i quickly called my friend to check out reviews and although many complimented the operating system and call quality, they also complained about the bulk of the phone. seeing that i am such a wimp, i stayed with tattoo which is much smaller.

there was further good news when we were at the counter. since my sis was switching from starhub to m1, we got $100 off the phone! the condition being that my sis had to retain her old number. but, she could choose to change her number anytime she sees fit. so, at the end of the day, i only paid $38 :)
