watami--take 2

had a rare chance to grab dinner with mum in town that day. in fact, being in town is a luxury, in between juggling school hours and the work i have to bring home. up till now, i've been mostly isolated and stranded in this other country called jurong west.

so, i decided to bring mum to try watami at ion. she was exhausted, having pulled a night shift and was more interested in going home to sleep.

we ordered the wafu beef bites, saba fish and pork kimchi nabe. i still love the beef! it still tasted as juicy as i remembered. mum had a ball of a time with the nabe as they were really generous with the vegetables.

we ended our meal with dessert--hot chocolate cake. however, it wasn't hot at all! the only thing that was close to warm was the chocolate sauce, which may i say was very thick. the dessert was served on this stone plate which was freezing! it kept the ice cream from melting, hence giving me plenty of time to take pictures.

mum's verdict? sushi tei is better. she thinks while the variety is plentiful here, the quality is still lacking. but it's still my kind of japanese food!

chili padi nonya cafe

chili padi--an interesting find tucked into a hidden corner of singapore. didn't even know it existed while i was studying at nus. now that i have graduated, it has come to my knowledge that there is a cheap nonya food buffet (only $13.80+) at heng mui keng terrace.

although the address shows that the restaurant is on the sixth floor, it is actually on ground level. any student from nus will know this, because of all the hilly terrain, the third floor of one block can connect to the first floor of another. so, remember not to climb six flights of stairs!

the entrance faces quite a weird direction. it is right in front of the washing station and you are blasted with an unpleasant smell the first thing after you walk through the doorway.

the buffet spread is quite small, but is unmistakably nonya food only. the spices and scent does tantalise my taste buds.

one thing you have to try is the kong ba bao. for me the bao is quite thick, so i ate only one side of it with the pork. even if you do not like the bao, you can just try the pork with steamed rice.

another dish to look out for is the laksa. you can help yourself to as many peeled prawns as you want. the gravy is thick and oh so good. do add some chili to spice things up a little!

other than the dishes featured here, the restaurant has an array of meat and vegetables which can be accompanied with steam rice. the beef rendang and chili fish are mouthwatering.

the most disappointing thing came at the end--desserts. the kuehs were hard and tasteless, fell short of my expectations, especially for a restaurant which specialises in nonya food. however, do not give the chwee kueh a miss (i have no idea why it was put in the dessert section). it's a chwee kueh with a twist--minced chicken in the mix!

crystal jade steamboat buffet @ holland village

went for a crystal jade steamboat buffet at holland village that day with my family. there were three seatings, we had to take the first one 5.30-7.30pm because the second one, which was cheaper by $3, was fully booked--on a Monday! just in cause you're wondering about the price difference, there's nothing different in the amount of food they served.

so what did we get for $22.80++?

1. free flow of drinks

we had a choice among barley (they only had cold ones), chinese tea and one more i can't remember. had so many refills for the barley!

2. two types of soup

from previous posts, it's obvious that my preference is a no brainer! so other than ma la, we had
century egg and coriander soup. while the latter sounds dubious, it was actually delicious! the soup went with everything. on the other hand, the ma la soup was quite disappointing.

3. 100g of prawns per person

that was equivalent to 3 (medium-large sized) prawns per person.

4. free flow of uncooked food

one thing you have to remember about ordering which is to order lots in advance. they take really long to serve, so by the time the food comes you would have waited 15-20 minutes. for us, most of the time we spent there was waiting. so we learnt after the second time and ordered 3 servings of meat at one time.

5. dim sum and xiao long bao

last but not least, the namesake of the restaurant--xiao long bao. fantabulous, even better than that of din tai fung! soft, tender and just bursts in your mouth! you should also try the char siew bao. just the right amount of bao and lots of filling!

singapore vs. haiti

watching the match now. in my opinion, some people are being too aggressive. i don't usually watch soccer but i know it doesn't involve pulling people's shirts and tripping them. and i'm pretty sick of having to watch people flop around the field, wasting time. as the commenter says "it is getting kind of embarrassing."

lunch in town

sis and i waiting for the bus to town to meet ys, as he's flying off soon to scotland to study.

played plants vs. zombies on the bus journey to orchard. highly addictive game.

waiting for our table at watami @ ion. it didn't take long even though it was lunch time.

salmon sashimi. look at those thick white lines!

salad with sesame dressing. huge plate of greens with a thong to toss the salad.

i absolutely have to rave about this! my favourite dish of the meal! wagyu beef bites. very tender and juicy. doneness just right. i need more!!!

the set meal comes with two drinks. remembering our fond memories of lemon yakult in hong kong, we topped up for fruit yakult for $2 each. i had mango, my sis had orange. this was the only disappointing thing of the meal. we couldn't taste any yakult at all.

seafood garlic rice. it came in a stone pot and we had to cook it ourselves. we were warned by the waitress not to let it wait too long as it will burn at the bottom. while my sis was tossing, i could smell the nice scent of garlic.

saba. yes, we got a whole fish! it was huge. the three of us couldn't even finish half. i like the fact that it was overly fishy.

chicken teriyaki wafu pizza. super yummy! the crust is thin and crispy and the filling just melts in your mouth.

tori karage, which i didn't manage to eat at all. by then i was so full i couldn't force myself to chomp down any more food.

salmon miso nabe. when it was first presented on our table, we couldn't see the soup at all. we thought they were going to pour in the soup later. however, after a couple minutes of boiling the soup started bubbling and we could suddenly see the soup plus cook our food. love the soup. it was extremely thick and tasty. and you know what?

all those only cost $59++!!!

it was a set meal for two, which three couldn't even make a dent in! delicious yet affordable japanese food.

ys went to agnes b because he needed to get for his friend a birthday present and while helping him search for one, something caught my eye!

i saw this and it was so pretty i couldn't resist! i was choosing between this and the one with an aqua agnes b symbol on top, but the symbol was only one sided, so i chose this. furthermore, my fingers are really slender and it's hard for me to find a ring that wouldn't slip off! so happy :)

next, after more shopping and walking, we managed to clear some space in our stomachs for dessert at cedele.

orange chocolate cheesecake. i saw this on their website for so long and finally got to try it. sis and ys didn't like it at all. i found it ok, the combination a bit weird. not my favourite and cedele does have better cakes.

on the other hand, i love my sis's cake! i was grabbing a bite once in a while, a respite from my cake. it light and spongy and so addictive :)

i'm addicted and loving it :)

i'm so happy! both my orders have arrived at the same time, just when i'm feeling pretty down at work.

first: lollyrouge

i have always loved their stuffs but during the latest collection and one of my weaker moments, i bought two items in a row.

the service is prompt and the owner, very friendly. she was really patient with my enquiries and kept me updated throughout the whole process, from update of items all the way to me receiving them.

lollyrouge has interesting and unique finds which i still have not seen in any of the other blogshops i have subscribed too (which is quite a number). furthermore, they are versatile pieces--good to wear both at work and during my off days--how wonderful is that?

second: bonitochico

this shop requires no introduction to any online shopping fans. their items sell out minutes after the owners' update. it's almost like a game where the fastest fingers win.

so both my items ordered were from their backorders and they have arrived without me being aware of them! i have just tried them on for size and so happy with the fit :) quite disappointed with the material for the blazer as i expected it to be some high quality thick material but it was just cotton. fortunately, it still manages to look nice and chic.

anyway mum's complaining about my wardrobe bursting from the sheer amount of clothes and that she is pretty sick of all the ironing! so i'm going to hold my horses for a while... until temptation or stress hits again!

prata wala @ jurong point

we had a first failed attempt and being gluttons for punishment, we were back for seconds last night at prata wala.

the cafe is small yet packed. there are people constantly standing around, waiting for seats.

just among the three of us, the bill came up to $22.20 for PRATA...

verdict: curry down right diluted, prata chilled quickly and it was definitely overpriced. if you're having prata craving, the one at jurong west library (just across the road) is much nicer.
