madam saigon @ milenia walk

there was once this delightful vietnamese restaurant, pho24, at millenia walk which offered delicious meals and authentic vietnamese food. however, it has long since closed and has been replaced by another, madam saigon.

so, craving some vietnamese food before our movie at suntec city, we opted to give the place a try to see if it matched up to its predecessor.

only mum and i ordered drinks. i had the sour plum juice while mum had the lemongrass juice, which was an introductory offer. the sour plum was too sour, would have been better if there were more sugar added. never liked lemongrass, so i didn't try mum's.

to be able to taste all the salads they had there, the waitress recommended the salad platter. the mango salad was good, but i couldn't make out what the other two salads were. the chicken one was interesting.

according to the calamari connoisseurs of my family, the calamari serving was small and nothing special.

this was probably the only dish that was worth recommending. don't remember the name of the dish, but i had it in vietnam. it's a dry noodle and you have to pour and stir in the sauce, kind of like rojak.

the beef pho was sadly lacking, tasted more like mee soto (yes i have no idea how it can even resemble mee soto).

stir fried prawns with rice. dad was ok with it, but wouldn't come back again.

madam saigon

how's brown lump?

wahaha she's growing bigger! and grumpier. my sis thinks this is a very ugly picture of her, but i love it because it shows how she looks every time she just wakes up.

on to the food...

my family and i had christmas eve dinner at margarita's, faber drive. we were afraid it was going to be very crowded, but it was not. maybe everyone went to town to celebrate. anyway, faber drive's the original outlet and more homey than the dempsey one. also, because the outlet is smaller, you get served faster and more individual attention.

most of the patrons dress down, probably they live around the area. similar to dempsey, it's one of those places you need a car to access.

their margaritas ($28/pitcher) are the best! truly no fight. so far those i have tried at various mexican restaurants can't compare.

every time we are there we order their signature beef fajitas ($48), huge enough for three to share. we decided to switch our choice of meat to tequila lime chicken ($28). nice... a bit like north indian cuisine, but a tad more sour.

chicken taco grande salad ($18). it's big and served in a fried taco bowl. at first i thought the chicken would be the same as the tequila lime chicken, due to the similarity in colour. but they are actually different. the chicken in the salad is lightly pan-fried to a golden brown, which accounted for the colour.

i forgot to take picture of the crab enchiladas ($34). was too engrossed in my tequila lime chicken. could also be due to the fact that it was attacked by the other three the moment it landed on the table.

for dessert we had chocolate chilli cake, a special item not on the menu, recommended by the waiter. the cake was moist and the chilli sauce placed was at the side. the chilli is spicy and salty, a contrast to the sweet chocolate cake. if you are not very adventurous, you can just eat the cake without the chilli.

and a family favourite, caramelised bananas in between fried tacos, topped with coconut ice-cream. da bomb! second time in a roll we're ordering this!

christmas @ angie's penthouse

i'm afraid there wouldn't be any pictures of the party as i left my camera at home! in my hurry to leave the house with the gifts and sandwiches, i forgot to bring my camera. hopefully biaojie uploads her blog, so there will be pictures of the night.

as usual, we each brought something to the party (was agreed beforehand). we didn't have much this year, seeing that we overestimate the amount of food needed every year and always had leftovers. besides, the main point was for everyone to get together and have fun.

after dinner, we settled at the various spots around the house. young people at the balcony to play monopoly deal, lazy people on the couch watching tv and old people at the dining table chatting.

the monopoly deal fever is really catching on! my cuz's bf carries one in his pocket all the time and my sis got it for her christmas present! so now we have a stack at home!

i bagged two presents (pardon the pun) this year. a pretty and cute straw bag for casual days and a grey (my santarina aunt insists it's light blue) charles and keith. actually i have the same one in white but it's rotting, so this bag came at exactly the right time.

evertop chicken rice

clementi has changed so much! i had a good friend in primary school who stayed at clementi avenue two and we always went to her house before heading for track and field in the afternoon. just yesterday, one of my colleagues brought me there for some halal chicken rice and the landscape has since differed.

you can spot evertop chicken rice as you turn into the carpark. the shop also bought over the space next door which doubles as a drink stall. once there, you can many framed up acclamations by newspapers.

we didn't have to wait long for the food at all. in fact, it arrived almost immediately. among the five of us, we ordered individual plates of hainanese chicken rice (same price if we shared), thai style tofu, ngoh hiang, braised eggs, sambal kang kong and fried dough fritters. everything amounted to $33.50.

i found the sambal kang kong superb, the taste of the chilli paste and dried shrimp came through.
also, the dough fritters were good too, not too oily and went well with the salad dressing. everyone polished off the tofu and ngoh hiang. we didn't finish the braised egg.

the portion of the chicken was a bit small but it was smooth and the acar at the side, crunchy, sweet and sour. according to D, there is a better stall off queensway, but he wasn't sure if it was halal. he mentioned that they even have a picture of the president dining there.

there was one interesting thing there. you could only order drinks after ordering the food! the three of us were waiting there for our colleagues to arrive and they didn't ask us what we wanted to drink. it was only until we ordered our food at the food counter that they passed us the drink menu! i tried morning sunrise, which was a smoothie of sorts of orange, apricot and peach. it was delicious! the rest ordered canned drinks and iced milo, which was a dollar plus.

i'll bring my family to try the chicken rice soon and see what they think about it :)

my wacky clique

woohoo! one post dedicated to my clique. we have been meeting up regularly this holiday :) it's great that everyone's making an effort to get together despite the various work and school schedules.

some of us met up at e food and wine @ dempsey road early in the week for dinner.

we sat outside. it was really dark and thankfully, mosquito-free due to all the mosquito coils.

the steak was delicious. tender and succulent.

we tried almost all the desserts. sad to say only the brownie and strawberry rhubarb pie were good. stay away from the creme brulee.

we then retired to siyu's new house!

and played monopoly deal, an addictive card game. am so going to get one!

XXXXXX

lenard invited us to his house for a themed party, which none of us dressed up for. however, we all definitely got gifts according to the theme, which was:

the host and chef. a pretty good one if the beef and fish are any indications.

we played some party games, also in line with the theme.

then we did the gift exchange. and here's what everyone got:

the gifts weren't all that racy, but we had fun teasing everyone and trying to make out what each item was.

a group shot with everyone present!

and then, some of them, decided for scientific reasons to try the edible gifts.

apparently, they do not taste like gummy and are rather tough.

more updates when we meet up for new year next week!
