dinner with mum at ajinomori previously when my clique went to ajinomori for dinner, i didn't realise it was the very restaurant that i bought my bigdeal.sg voucher for. i got the voucher for $29.80 for a ten-course set lunch/dinner. first dish: fried salmon skin, of which we didn't eat a lot. i've never fancied fish skin, fried or otherwise. second dish: baked scallops with caviar. my mum felt it was lukewarm and had probably been prepared much earlier. not a part of the set meal, the yuzu tea that my clique loved during our visit. $4/cup, comes hot or cold. third dish: fried pork with melted cheese. i didn't even know there was cheese until my mum bit hers into half and we could see the cheese. fourth-seventh dish: honey marinated pork belly, stuffed chicken wings, beef short ribs on skewer and shitake mushroom on skewer. these were probably the best dishes of the night. the pork was especially good! eight dish: maki nomo (assorted maki). my mum loved the salmon one, she said the salmon was seared perfectly. ninth dish: orange gratin. it was kind of weird. it was the last dish so we thought it was a dessert but it was some sort of milky fruit and shrimp concoction. the tenth dish was of course, rice to accompany all the other dishes. overall, my mum thought that the friends restaurant deal was much better as some of the dishes here were not up to her expectations. so i guess we wouldn't be patronising this place much as a family. *bleah, i didn't go to my jc gathering or natas fair Saturday, February 26, 2011 @ 22:04

friends--the food and wine people dad, mum and i went to friends @ jelita for some good food. we kind of abandoned my sis as it's really hard to coordinate an available time with her, so we left her the bigdeal voucher to eat in her own time. the restaurant was kind of understated and smaller than expected. behind it's unpretentious facade were these superbly great meals. my $15 bigdeal voucher entitled us to a 5 course meal of their chef's signature items. also, i received a 1-1 pear cider voucher and we redeemed it that day. we did browse through the menu and their food in general isn't very expensive. the cider was like a champagne, extremely effervescent and not very fruity. i totally loved their angel hair pasta appetiser. it was marinated in truffle oil, tossed with konbu and chive and topped with caviar. unique and we simply couldn't get enough of it. their mushroom soup was very thick and could be compared to that of soup spoon and dozo. the main course was their sakura chicken breast, served on a scoop of mashed potatoes. not loving the choice of meat (i'm more of a thigh kind of person) but i do have to admit that the cut was very tender. cappucino cheesecake was the dessert of the day. the serving was puny, but i was already more than full from the first 3 courses. we ended off with coffee and tea. a very satisfying meal at friends restaurant :) would definitely go back for the angel hair pasta as well as to try their steak. heading to a happening weekend i had a great weekend :) hands down. looking back, i'm amazed that i was able to do so many things in the middle of a school term, with markings coming in and common test round the corner. first of all, i organised a bbq for my colleagues from the english department as well as my good friends from other departments. however, only people from the english deparment turned up, as well as ivy, one of my practicum mates. we had a fun time starting the fire (ok that was not so fun, kind of like cavemen trying to spark a fire with rocks) and cooking our food. pictures taken after land tour (to my house). some of them had left already. we were thinking of doing this every three months to chill, have fun and destress. XXXXXX second on the itinerary was an excerise-cum-hang-out (to work those flabby arms and thighs) with my clique. we thought of many activities to do--rollerblading at east cost, ice-skating at marina bay sands--but in the end, we went bowling at the chevrons instead. we had to call and book two lanes because the bowling alley is usually very crowded, true enough, by the time we got there, the only two lanes left unoccupied were the two lanes left for us. siyu has the weirdest bowling style. ok my arms were aching after the first game :( how weak! lenard clocked the fastest speed. the system actually tabulates how fast your ball is rolling and flashes it on the screen above. kenneth was the best bowler among all of us. i suspect he bowls in his free time. nessa was on a winning streak. so was her boyfriend bryan. you could also choose the theme of your screen! it was very fun to customise the screen and our nicks. check them out: we came up with loser lenard, gutter lady, gutter lover, totally guttering, strike coming and many more lame options. here are the rates for the bowling alley: do bring along your safra card for discount. for more information on orchid bowl, visit this website. XXXXXX after bowling, we were feeling peckish and drove down to holland village for some dinner. lenard felt like eating japanese and we found a new restaurant called ajinomori. the restaurant offered outdoor seating, traditional japanese style tables and booths. look at the fresh and thickly sliced sashimi. the assorted sashimi (6 types) cost $39. from left, clockwise: beansprout appetiser, garlic fried rise, teppanyaki beef and kimchi pork nabe. the appetiser was sour and salty, we didn't really like it. the garlic fried rice was very fragrant and appetising. the beef was overcooked. the kimchi nabe was delicious! instead of the normal green tea, they had citron (yuzu) tea. very yummy! i had the calpis soda which tasted like original flavoured yakult with soda water. complimentary desssert, caramelised egg custard pudding, from the chef. will not trade my weekend for anything in the world! |
