owen seafood restaurant we had dinner at owen seafood restaurant at the old turf club along bukit timah road, on saturday. it was a treat from my aunt! she wanted to celebrate the birthdays of the november babies all at once. here's everyone who turned up. we reached there at 7pm but the food was served only around 8pm. it kind of set off the tone for the whole dinner. the food arrived usually cold and there was always a long break between dishes. had absolutely no idea what it was, some clam thingy (my obvious lack of seafood knowledge). it could be eaten as sashimi (wasabi was provided) or cooked in the steamboat. most of my relatives complained that the clam was sliced too thinly and thus, while the clam was sweet, the taste didn't come through. my sweet niece who's actually a little tyrant and you can see how she ran the show later. bamboo clams with loads and loads of garlic. as my sis maintains, anything with garlic is always good. didn't have any but the garlic did smell heavenly. i am also not sure what kind of vegetable this is. it looks really great and they only served the leaves and removed the stalks, which i think is commendable (hate stalks). however, the vegetable was quite bitter. my grandma said it was good for the eyes. why are beneficial foods always unappetising? lemon chicken without lemon sauce. the waitress actually told us it was supposed to be served this way. so we called the manager. and she took the plate back and got us our lemon chicken with lemon sauce. prawns cooked with salted egg. looked and smelled yummy. couldn't resist it and i scooped some of the salted egg to try. just had to slip in a shot of the twins. noticed during dinner (had lots of time since i didn't eat seafood) that the reflection in the glass made it four of them and i had to take a picture. next up, minced duck and mushroom. wrap spoonfuls of duck and mushroom in the cabbage above and pop it into your mouth. in the end, most of them just had the duck with their rice, so we had lots of cabbage left, which will be featured later too. fish in claypot. probably one of the only dishes which came piping hot. i was actually blown away by the siew yok (roasted third layer pork). gave a salty taste to the dish. crab beehoon. i thought it was flower crab, but my sis said it's not. she could't discern what it was either. but my aunts loved it, especially the beehoon. platter of fruits and lian rong (lotus seed) pau, compliments of the restaurant because we complained about the poor service standard. the colour of the pau looks artificial in picture, but it was a nice peach pink (forgive the pun). my cousin disclosed that when the restaurant is not that crowded, the service is better and the food is constantly hot. desserts, mango pudding and guilin gao. then we move on to the little tyrant, who made us work in shifts between dishes. she kept crying so my aunt designed a game, which consisted of fanning some dust motes. after that, adri started pulling people from the table to participate in the game. shift 1: my aunts shift 2: adri's father and cuz wanqi (the birthday people) shift 3: adri's mum shift 4: yours truly. taught her to use the leftover cabbage to fan, instead of using her hands. shift 5: rojak shift 6: my aunt and adri's uncle. game shited to london bridge. shift 7: birthday girl, birthday boy, adri's uncle and my aunt despite the bad and slow service of the restaurant, we still had fun! and little tyrant made us work for our meal :) Labels: birthdays, family, food |
