not essential at all

i'm sure you have seen this product, essential damage care, on the shelves of supermarkets, watsons and guardians recently. it's new and they are doing an all-out promotion of the item. seeing that my shampoo supply was depleting, i decided to try it. of course i started with a small bottle just in case, which proved really fortunate for me.

i was first attracted by the attractive packaging (baby pink and bright orange) and the "care for the last 15cm of hair" bit, as well as it was made in japan by kao corporation. next, to tick off my shampoo-buying checklist.
  1. minimal sodium laureth sulfate (my sis read all the haircare books and it's damaging to the scalp)--checked
  2. smelling test (both bottles smelled sweet)--checked
  3. hair type (for light and bouncy hair)--checked
  4. price ($4.50)--checked
on ah! the shampoo apparently passed the test with flying colours, so i bought it.

however, when my sis go home and saw the new shampoo, she told me ammonium laureth sulfate is worse than sodium laureth sulfate! oh my god! she warned me against sodium laureth sulfate because it is a common component in shampoos and though it is approved, it's best to get a shampoo with little or none of that. ammonium laureth sulfate is very harsh and usually found in detergent!

here's the order of chemicals in order of harshness (salonweb.com):
  • ammonium lauryl sulfate--very, very, harsh
  • ammonium laureth sulfate--very harsh but better than the above
  • sodium lauryl sulfate--better than the above, but still a l ittle harsh
  • sodium laureth sulfate--gentle, better pick!
  • tea lauryl sulfate--great pick
  • tea laureth sulfate--great pick
so next time when you are shopping for shampoos, remember to look at the label!
